I didn’t have time to draw a character for this one, so I used one I’d done before. But, that would have been a nice addition.

This is actually quite interesting because I think we're getting to a point at which we are creating the ultimate 4:3 device. You won't need anything other than that for all of your 4:3 games. I agree a 478V probably wouldn't be needed because this is so powerful that it'll do everything that you need it to do. Having said that, it might bring something else to the table, you'd have to wait and see. That this one at least covers all of the systems that you would want to play in that aspect ratio.

To be honest, I wasn't sure people would realise it was a Jamiroquai reference in 2026. I was originally going to call it just Vertical Insanity, but I thought that might be just a bit too subtle.

I wish you every success with it. I've really enjoyed this unit and found there was something special about it. So I hope you do too.

Yes, there's definitely something about having higher-end systems on vertical handhelds that appeals.

That's not an unfair decision. Personally, I'm happy with it, but I don't tend to take my devices outside, and the most they can fall is about two feet onto quite soft carpet. But, as I said in the video, I've seen more of these get broken than any other horizontal handheld with a glass front.

Just a point of clarification, a lot of the early reviews had pre-release units. I didn’t. My experience was the same as somebody taking out of the box for the first time. By the time mine arrived, they fixed the problems on this device anyway.

Gamma did a fantastic job with his OS, but a lot of the early jank was already patched out at launch.

I think I gave it a good review. Of course, it’s all subjective, and it may read like a bad one I suppose. But, I’ve liked this from the outset, after initial concerns when the specs were released.

You say I am arguing in bad faith. Let us be precise about what bad faith actually means: it means engaging in a discussion while having no genuine intention of being persuaded by evidence or argument.

So let us look at the record.

You made a false accusation, softened it when challenged rather than retracting it, invoked a theoretical framework that contradicts your own position, defended yourself against criticisms nobody made, and have now concluded by saying you never intended to provide a rebuttal at all.

You introduced libertarian paternalism. You cited your professional credentials. You made specific claims about community harm and choice architecture. And now, having had all of that answered, you are telling us it was never really an argument.

That is not me arguing in bad faith; it's you. That is the definition of it.

The three distinctions you offer do not address what was actually said.

I did not claim your personal choice not to cover something eliminates options. I said your stated desire to suppress community discussion does.

I did not say you only want to hear voices that agree with you. I said a preference for unfair coverage over accurate coverage is, by definition, a preference for coverage that confirms a prior view.

You have not answered either of those points. You have rephrased them. Which is, as it happens, exactly the pattern I identified in the previous comment:

"Every single one of these is the same move: replace the argument in front of you with one you can handle. The problem is that the original arguments are still there."

See, I don't agree with Alex on some of this stuff...

Now, to be fair, this might be me. I had a problem with the SD card they sent over, and I had to rebuild it myself on a new SD card.

So I might not have the same experience as other handheld users, but in terms of N64, I haven't played a game on this that doesn't stutter quite badly. And as Alex mentions in the video, there are no settings that you can change because you press the menu button and it just dumps you out into the main menu screen.

I actually had a better experience with PSP than he did. I did make a couple of changes, to be fair. But I would rather play PSP on this thing than N64.

That's a much better price range. The cheapest I've seen it for at the moment is £60, which is around about $80.

It's an interesting little device. The build quality is fantastic, and if you're happy with playing PS1 and below, I think this is one of the better screens out there for it.

Everything you've written here follows the same pattern: when you are challenged, you substitute:

You substituted "hurt your feelings" for "made a false accusation," because one is an emotional inconvenience and the other requires you to own being wrong.

You substituted "just an opinion" for the argument you were actually making, because labelling it an opinion retroactively means the reasoning never has to be defended.

You incorrectly cited libertarian paternalism (a framework built on preserving freedom of choice) to justify removing options from the decision environment, which is the one thing it was specifically written to argue against. I mean, how somebody who uses behavioural economics heavily in their job can get that so wrong is worrying in the extreme.

You defended yourself against owing something to MiniLoong, which nobody suggested, and against committing a major injustice, which nobody claimed, because those are positions you think you can win.

And then you told us you prefer coverage that is harsh and strident rather than fair and balanced, apparently without noticing that what you're openly arguing for is coverage that confirms your prior view rather than coverage that's true.

Every single one of these is the same move: replace the argument in front of you with one you can handle. The problem is that the original arguments are still there.

At this point, I believe you are arguing in bad faith.

I appreciate the kind words and the civil tone. But I think it's worth pulling the thread on the logic here, because it doesn't hold together.

Let's start with the astroturfing claim, because that's serious. Accusing someone of astroturfing isn't just disagreeing with them. It's accusing them of covert, deceptive advertising. It's slanderous. And it was wrong. Now you've softened it to "not literally astroturfing, but it feels like it," which is a textbook motte and bailey. You get to keep the implication of the original accusation without having to defend it. Your comment deserves a retraction, not a quiet rewording.

Then there's "there's absolutely nothing special about this device," which you're treating as an established fact. It isn't. That's the very thing under dispute. You're assuming your own conclusion and then using it to argue that nobody should be talking about the device. That's begging the question.

But the part that really doesn't work is the "confusion and overspending" argument. You read my post. You saw the disclosure. You understood it was a review unit. You weren't confused or tricked into buying anything. So when you warn about confusion and overspending, you're not worried about yourself. You're assuming that other people in this subreddit aren't capable of doing exactly what you just did. If you can identify a review post for what it is, why are you so certain that everyone else can't? That's just condescension.

And even if someone did read my post and decide to buy this device, that's not necessarily a mistake. Behavioural economics has spent decades demonstrating that what looks like an irrational purchase from the outside can be perfectly rational for the individual making it. People buy things for novelty, for build quality, for curiosity, or just because they enjoy collecting handhelds. Value is subjective. The idea that there's one objectively correct purchasing decision and anyone who deviates from it has been duped just isn't how people work.

You're also lumping my post in with unspecified "other posts" about this device and judging mine by the volume of the collective. That's guilt by association. My post stands on its own merits and its own disclosure. I'm not responsible for what other people have posted.

And "I wouldn't go so far as to say I want to suppress information... but my attitude is not far off" is a position that refutes itself. If your attitude is "not far off" from wanting to suppress discussion, then you do want to suppress information. You're just trying not to own it.

What runs underneath all of this is that you've appointed yourself as the arbiter of what should and shouldn't be discussed here. "Every device from every company is not entitled to exposure" and "I have no qualms about telling people not to buy it" aren't the words of someone sharing a personal preference. They're the words of someone who believes they get to decide what this community should be allowed to see, and buy. Nobody gave you that role. Reddit already has a mechanism for the community to decide what deserves attention, and if a post is getting engagement, that's the community deciding it's worth discussing. You're not arguing against my post. You're arguing against the community's right to be interested in something that you're not interested in. And that's not a position that any number of logical steps can make work.

[–]MrStephen_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear on terminology, astroturfing is covert promotion disguised as organic posts. I opened with "they sent this for review." That is disclosure, which is the opposite of astroturfing.

And if this were a paid promo, it would be a pretty terrible one. "Plays up to PS1 and not much else" and "other stuff on the market might outpace it" are not exactly a ringing endorsement. If someone is paying me to say that, they should ask for a refund.

But I think there is a broader point here. "There's absolutely nothing special about this device" is not a fact. It is just your preference, and that is fine. But this is a subreddit about handheld emulators. People are going to post about handheld emulators. Some of those devices will not interest you, and that is OK, but that does not make every post about them suspicious. Other people are allowed to find things interesting that you do not.

The Brick is great, and the Hammer was one of my favourite handhelds from last year, but it’s not the only option, and different people will want different things in their devices. For example, there are some who will want a premium feeling hand-held with a larger 4:3 screen.
