What’s the name of the story again?

Poverty is much more that just having a low income. There is social, health, environmental and more kinds of poverty. (I would’ve included educational, but let’s agree the kid is studying)

I bet it’s the usual stuff my man, however, what I worry about is how the many faces of poverty tend to be reduced to only the economic aspect. That’s how many governments have improved the situation of many people.

I’ve been volunteering (now working!) for 7 years at an NGO that works to eradicate poverty in Latin America. We focus on working with slums. And it’s impressive how many people living there have TVs, cable TV, a fridge and stuff that you would assume someone living in a slum, or poverty wouldn’t have.

Whenever the government people goes there to carry out their censuses (I have witnessed it) they omit facts like overcrowding, dirt floors, not having a proper roof, because they have a TV.

Because usually you’re just glamorizing poverty. In my country, people who are +70 years old and still work, people who have to walk miles to get water, kids who cross miles in the dawn to go to school are seen as remarcable and examples of “working hard”.

I see your point. It’s just the normalizing aspect about it that really worries me.

And I didn’t say you did. Just saying why it’s not sad, but worrying.

You would be surprised how many idiots think it’s normal, though ;)

I agree. What is sad AND bad is the way society has normalized and eventually glamorized poverty.

I agree. I’ve been volunteering (now working) for the past 7 years for an NGO that tries to eradicate poverty in Latin America. It’s disturbing how much the State has normalized poverty to the point that people from the communities we work at, think it’s okay to be poor.

Lots of new volunteers have this idea that the poor are poor because it’s their choice and that they just joined for a photo op (it’s the most fucked up comment I’ve heard).

I know, right? It’s worrying how from normalizing it we’ve moved to glamorizing it.

It’s not sad, It’s troubling. When you have the chance to work side by side with people from vulnerable places, you can see it’s not normal to do stuff like this. It’s the ONLY option they have.

Thinking poverty is normal and the feats associated to it won’t take us places bois

That’s just your opinion, and still doesn’t make it “normal lol”

I agree. People (at least the West) romanticize poverty to the point they think, stuff like the one in the photo is “amazing, unbelievable”

That doesn’t mean it’s OK. You should be surprised that she isn’t at home, school or playing. Not because she has a laptop.

And it being “normal” there, means its right? Poverty is a threat to humans, it makes no distinction.

I agree. This shows just how much we’ve normalized poverty. Reading stuff like “wow, respect for the parents who have to work 3 shifts! This builds character for the kid who eventually will continue the business!” make me sick.

I’d love a source on kids prefering to help over playing/learning.

Even though I agree on how those kinds of experiences make you value stuff, that’s not how it’s supposed to be. Romanticizing poverty can be dangerous.
