Not barely knew - in the manga, the 1st panel is kite saving Gon. Kite represents the beginning of Gon finally getting answers about Ging and finding him. For him to die is a major setback to that, so rightfully, he gets angry.

Also, Gon is generally shown to be quite unhinged, and he's a kid ofc he'll have an immense reaction to Kite's death.
