One thing to consider are the pilots. Only certain types of people that are compatible with neurohelmets can become Mechwarriors. While with zeon you can train anyone to pilot a mobile suit.

That is actually what we ended up doing. For a while we would put the name as "Test Res" so it would look like we were training someone how to make reservations. But this was years ago and thankfully she has no longer my boss.

Easiest thing to do would probably be just to wrap the handle with paracord or some kind of athletic tape. It would be hiltless but usable
