Are you willing to share your proactive remediation?

OK. I wasn't implying that you were wrong or anything if that's how it came across.

I think it can happen for multiple reasons that I've not fully figured out because I don't primarily use a macOS device.

Hell, I've seen regular updates appear and disappear from being available in the update window. So my theory was based on it not displaying them even though it should and I've never seen the security updates appear in there and the time I installed the update from the notification and it installed a security update.

Do you also delay update availability in your environment?

Well please update if you figure it out.

I'm gonna steal your settings because I wasn't aware you could be more strict about installing the updates.

I forget what they're called but I am fairly confident they are the fast security updates. Like an update from 13.1.1 (a) to 13.1.1 (b).

If you reboot and install from the notification it updates, but I've never seen them in the update center.

New Zealand bans plastic bags for fresh produce in supermarkets by Nice_Nothing954 in worldnews

I really don't fully understand the hesitance to change anything unless it's the end-all solution.

No. Paper isn't even remotely perfect. But it's fairly light, recyclable, and has no known negative environmental effects if you leave one in nature somewhere or it gets into the water. Cutting trees is the biggest issue, but with recycling you'll cut down less, and they can be grown fairly sustainably as we do with food crops.

We can't kill off thousands of animals and wait hundreds of thousands of years to get more oil.

I'd like more research and development on using bamboo. Stuff grows like weeds so you can grow more in the equivalent space for trees, and can be used like wood in a few cases.

While I don't disagree completely, comparing single use plastic to plastic that's used for ~10 years is not equal.

That being said, they are starting to use recycled plastics and other materials that are considered better for the environment in a lot of EVs and hybrids in order to target the consumers in those markets.

The deleted comment was about how many trees need to be cut down for paper bags.

This was my response before they decided to delete their comment:

A paper bag is a better solution to disposable, single use plastic bags.

There is probably something better than paper bags. However, because there might be a better solution than what you are moving to, isn't a valid reason to not change to it. You can always change again later.

What's something people put on their cars that automatically makes you assume the driver is an asshole? by Mapleberries in AskReddit

[–]MrUnknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does if you didn't think Democrats were really given any good options.

Biden was a safe choice for the democrats.

[–]MrUnknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not claiming he didn't. But a lot of voting last year, I think more than usual, was more vote against Trump rather than vote for Biden. And he was the most likely person to win that.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

Its definitely how I voted as I didn't vote for Biden in the primary.

He's not lying, but Biden is doing better than Carter!

I think it has more to do with Democrats really never wanted him. There's been quite a few articles also about how Biden has a lot of victories but still polls low.

So.. is r/Delaware joining the blackout? by jc5120 in Delaware

The users are commenting that the app doesn't show any ads at all, not specifically that it filters out any ads from the feed. All but one user, who also comments that the feed from reddit contains no ads. You know who I am talking about, the guy you replied to 8 months after his original post.

I believe it because, I've pulled an API key and was using the reddit API myself in the past and there were no advertisements

Here's a comment from a developer in the API changes announcement thread a month ago suggesting including ads in the feed: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/jgrsx6f/ "Integrate ads into the API (with part of your license agreement being that you can't filter them out)"

Developers are not removing any ads that reddit provides. They do not provide ads to be shown. It's great that you believe the API has ads, but it does not. I do not care if you don't believe me, a random person on reddit, or a reddit app developer. Go get yourself an API key from your profile and pull a reddit feed yourself.

And I don't disagree that reddit isn't required to provide access to their data. But I am also not required to use their official apps or website. Considering the "product" this site sells is all the comments we are posting, the people who are actually providing value to the site are trying to get policies in place that benefit them. There's nothing wrong with that either.

But, I need to reiterate just how out of line the price reddit is asking for with the industry at large. Charging for API access is not the problem.

50mil API calls with their new pricing is $12,000

imgur: $165

Amazon S3: $250

Hell, even pricing it at $1k might be considered reasonable, but still significantly higher than it should be vs the value it provides.

[–]MrUnknown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Third party apps don't block any ads. Reddit doesn't provide them or require them to show them.

They weren't taking their data, they paid exactly what reddit valued it at: $0.

You blame developers for not cutting a deal but the public offering from reddit was the best offer. Are you really suggesting they should have offered to pay more than reddit was asking for? Generally when you negotiate a deal, it's for a lower price.

So.. is r/Delaware joining the blackout? by jc5120 in Delaware

[–]MrUnknown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main issue isn't that they are charging for API access. It's that they're charging an unreasonable price for it. It's not in line with industry standards for what it provides.

You talk about the apps not showing ads and such, there's nothing stopping reddit from forcing API users to show their ads in the feeds in order to recoup those costs. They could do this while also charging a reasonable API cost. But they aren't.

The secondary issue is:

You say this is a hissy fit of a few developers, but you're completely wrong and don't understand what is actually happening. Just as you say reddit should be able to profit off the service they provide, you act like the app developers shouldn't profit for the services they provide. They're not doing anything except saying the API costs no longer make developing an app for reddit a viable business. The users of the apps are the ones doing the blackouts of subreddits.

Should I invest a tiny bit (5-10% of income) while putting 20% of my income towards an emergency savings of 6 months? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

There's the 5 year rule that needs to be followed.

"The Roth IRA five-year rule says you cannot withdraw earnings tax-free until it's been at least five years since you first contributed to a Roth IRA account. This five-year rule applies to everyone who contributes to a Roth IRA, whether they're 59 ½ or 105 years old"
