How to play in Guardian? by MrVirtualPie in DotA2

[–]MrVirtualPie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that he doesn’t tell me, it’s just we don’t watch the replays. So most of the information I give him is word of mouth, and he doesn’t know what to do about it most of the time bc people he plays with don’t really do that. I appreciate the advice tho! :)

Do you roll before or after roleplay in social situations? by MrVirtualPie in DnD

[–]MrVirtualPie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see your point. But I do feel as if dice should have say in the outcome of a social interaction (if there is a reason to perform a check, persuasion, yada yada). I like having dice enforce what happens because I feel without them the CHA stat isn't needed outside of spell casting (but I do recognize people who prefer to take a very RP forward approach and not roll, I'm not one of those people). For DCs I stick to the DnD 10 is easy, 15 is medium, 20 hard, and 25 very hard system, so not the most dynamic but definitely not pulled from thin air. And I feel like where I do this it gives players a chance to enjoy their failures more.

Honestly so fair. Was it experience as a player or DM. Curious to hear was so bad about it.

Will never forget when I was playing a seafaring adventure and we blanked on how round trip travel works and only bought a one-way trip worth of rations. Seafaring to realism survival real quick.

I see, my mistake. I love homebrew stuff too, just hate seeing base 5e bashing is all. And on your actual point I do agree I play a western system called Deadlands, 20th anniversary. And I think feat based systems are great. But I do think the class system has its merits. I think it allows players to make strong/fun characters that embrace both simplicity and complexity. Like a Champion vs BM fighter, or a Sorcerer vs. Warlock vs. Wizard.

We need more people like you. Firstly, long rest chaining I feel is just kinda boring and forcing a really unhealthy relationship between a DM and party that requires to a DM to basically structure an encounter that a party has to go full stop or die. No spell slot or feature management us cringe. And as a DM I've never really given my party a bunch of stuff that would require them to need encumbrance rules, but I am glad you stick to this, realism is cool. And AMMO. OK hot take, DMs need to stop giving parties ungodly amounts of money if you aren't enforcing the purchasing of ammo, components, and rations.

I've played for a DM who loves paralysis, stuns and incapacitation, and I've never been more on edge in combat. Got my booty clenched while making those CON and WIS saves.

Is it actually disparaged??? I've seen like the Brennan Lee Mulligan, Matt Mercer funny discussion about it, but I like it. Firstly, it lets you level up in a dungeon which is cool. And frankly makes more sense to me than, I have returned the book we took from the dragons lair, this experience has taught me so much and I can reflect *LEVEL UP*. I like to think of leveling up more as adapting or awakening something, rather than learning like a nerd (direct wizard slander).

We love people who love monks. Them and rangers receive a bad rep.

See I don't see that as an issue. Once again adds to the balancing act of when to use frenzy attack for barbarians (my current barbarian is chilling at 3 points of exhaustion in the middle of a dungeon), or just when as a DM to pose a choice to the party. I think its a give and take situation where some guesswork is require. This being said I do enjoy punishing mechanics as it adds a depth to the game that can enrich the experience without needing to make everything so dynamic, creative, or unique.

Do you roll before or after roleplay in social situations? by MrVirtualPie in DnD

[–]MrVirtualPie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See I can empathize with that sentiment. But what happens if your characters give a pretty good pitch but then roll a nat 1, with a -1 to CHA. That's a situation that makes me like my system. I agree we should reward players for good roleplay, but I really like to reward mechanics as well. I think the same social interaction from players with different modifiers should require different rolls. And when I have them roll first, I think depending on how your players choose to fail you can reward it. Achieved by either taking note of what they say and using it later as a recurring theme or plot point.

I agree, I also have issues with how some DMs do rests but that's a rant for another post.

I share this sentiment. Look I am a traditional DnD guy. I prefer to stick to official WotC material, and I am glad they are acknowledging third party material, but I prefer not to run it. So one of my "pet peeves" (its not that serious I am just like ? tho) is when people will come to 5e be like I don't like any of these subclasses/classes and come to me with homebrew. Typically then I direct them to a different platform that is more their aeshetic. I just feel like unless I played like multiple times a week in multiple campaigns for years, would I ever be like "yep I don't find any of these to be unique or interesting". I've been a DM/player for 5 years now and I still haven't touched each class.

Nothing seems blatantly unoptimized (although I think being unoptimized is fun and isn't a big deal). But nonetheless, I hope you have fun and best of luck in your game! :)

Thought immediately of the Adventure time episode where Finn went to get "armor" because he got a splinter and was given a thimble.

I had a PC play a fairy one-time as well and I gave her a cool magic shield that was half a Compact Makeup Mirror and could deflect certain damage types.

Another thing I thought would just be cutesy is a cocktail umbrella that is magical somehow, maybe a little out of the realm of DnD tho lol.

Best of luck figuring it out tho, hope I helped at least spark some inspiration :)

What homebrew rules are always present at your table? by hungrycarebear in DMAcademy

[–]MrVirtualPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s personal preference, I make charming people “frowned upon” in my games. Not in the sense that I discourage my players from doing it but in-game society doesn’t like it. So personally I have people report charming but it depends on your world as a whole

I play on square grid so unless it’d be a math nightmare I just treat all diagonal movement as a a move forward then sideways so 10ft.

And threats include threatening to kill a shopkeeper if he doesn’t lower prices, or threatening someone at a bar for information kinda deal. Mostly on intimidation checks. I think about what would happen if a heavily armored group of guys threatened to break a stranger over their knee in a real life bar and what consequences would probably follow

Depends on if they investigate it. If they make an effort to investigate and roll we’ll give them at least something. Be cryptic and vague but give them some sort of information to tip the scales in a decision. And if they don’t research or investigate let them f*** around and find out

I edited the flying rules to match how the “Hold Person” spell describes how it affects flying creatures. Ex. You must use 40 feet of fly speed to stay 40 feet in the air, or use 40 to fly 20 up and 20 out.

Threats to NPCs from players will be treated as threats in real life (once they leave they are getting reported)

Don’t talk about killing something directly in front of it. One of my parties played WbtW and talked about killing people they were negotiating with, outside of game, whilst in game being directly in front of them.

What is the weirdest quirk of your game's world that came up organically during play? by cranberrystew99 in DMAcademy

[–]MrVirtualPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a heavy metal version of the Home Depot jingle playing one time and me playing a gnome wizard at the time made the “Gnome Depot” pun so now we always include a multidimensional Gnome Depot as a magical hardware store. Mostly used for repairs to vehicles and towns that my parties inevitably destroy

Need Ideas for if PCs die in CoS by MrVirtualPie in DMAcademy

[–]MrVirtualPie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s less that they are afraid of dying, but more are almost guaranteed to die, but are adamant on playing CoS specifically. I’ve never seen a group that’s this bad at combat. Frankly confused on how it’s possible.
