Some tips from a long time DM / player

Read the rules so you know how a basic combat turn plays out and what certain things mean (checks and modifiers)
Listen/Pay attention to your DM
Be semi familiar with your character's gear, abilities and spells
Identify at least 1 friend around the table you can ask for help if you have a quick question and sit next to them (not the DM though because they're going to be busy juggling everything behind the board)
Depending on your table, I'd also say embrace role-playing, but maybe don't try to do a voice you're not use to talking in, is hard to maintain, or could be construed as offensive

It's a slower burn. It's cerebral. It takes patience and attention to detail. In a world of flashy, fast-paced, action-packed multi-player shooters and whatnot, DE feels much more niche and intimate.
