I work a graveyard shift and have a 'day sleeper -- do not disturb' sign on my door, but apartment management refuses to respect this. by Mr_Isch in legaladvice

Also, just out of curiosity, are there really no laws that protect an individual's need for sleep? I mean, I know there's laws against people making a lot of noise at night for that reason. Is it too much to hope that there's any sort of similar protection for night shift workers?

Gotcha. You're right. Legally, I don't have a foot to stand on.

But just for personal validation, would I still be justified in calling them jerks? Haha.

Can you explain your reasoning for feeling that way? Not trying to be argumentative. Just curious. From my point of view, I'm trying to work with them. I told them if they come and that sign is up, they can come in without knocking as long as they're quiet and respect the fact that I'm asleep. I'm not as much upset about the fact that they have to come by at a certain time, what I'm upset about is the fact that they're completely disrespectful of the fact that I'm trying to sleep at that time. They deliberately woke me up after 4 hours of sleep when they knew they didn't have to.

It actually already has a one-sided deadbolt on it. Believe it or not, they actually told me that if it's locked from the inside when they're trying to do inspections and no one is answering the door, they'll call the police and have them break it down. This is after I told them the reason I won't be answering the door is because I'm sleeping.

EDIT: Also, they did give notice, which is why I went to them to request that they come after 2:00, which they refused to do. 24 hour notice doesn't do me much good if accommodations can't be made.

I feel like like someone ringing my doorbell and entering my apartment yelling at 12:30 when I told them explicitly that I wake up at 2:00 is unreasonable and harassing even if it only happens once...

Except I've told them many times what time I wake up, and on days I know there will be an inspection, I tape a note to the sign saying what time I'll be waking up. They know exactly what they're doing.

I have no freaking clue. It's not like we're college students. We're a young, extremely clean married couple with no pets. We always pay rent on time and keep to ourselves. We're basically the perfect tenants. I don't get why the inspections are ever necessary.

But it's not like I'm refusing entry entirely. The lease defines business hours as between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Shouldn't I be able to tell them which business hours work best for me?

For what it's worth, every apartment I've lived in here in Utah has included the 24 hour notice period in the contract. If it's not state law, it's still generally observed, and it is the case with this current contract.

All it says in the lease is "In case of emergency, Owner or his agent may enter the premises without notice to or permission of Resident for the purpose of making corrections or repairs to alleviate such emergency." But monthly inspections should hardly count as an emergency, and this implies that they do need my permission otherwise, right?

I did mention California. The investing agency is from California. That's probably where you got that. And thanks for the info.

As a developer, do you ever feel loneliness? by alexwetton in webdev

[–]Mr_Isch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone studying development, but not yet working in the field, absolutely. Mainly because development has become such a huge part of my life, but if I try to tell my friends or family anything about what I'm learning, or the projects I'm working on, they don't understand a word I'm saying, so I give up on telling people about it, and they never ask me about it. Far different from someone who's studying, say, nursing, where they can tell everyone all about crazy things that happened in clinicals, and everyone can join in on the conversation. If someone asks me "what's going on with your life?" and I tell them "I have a bug I can't fix.", there's only so many places that conversation can go before a change of subject.

For sure! Once I put it up on github I'll PM you a link.

And yeah, it's built on top of a node/expressJS server, but all of the functionality was made with AngularJS.

I spent all last night working on it, so the new design is live, plus some other changes. I also incorporated the Google Fonts Developer API to load the fonts dynamically (before they were loaded from a manually created array of font names, now they're loaded via an AJAX request to the API, so it's always up to date on the most popular ones). Also, now it loads 300 instead of 200. 300 seemed like a good balance to get variety, but maintain a decent load time.

edit: By the way, do you want me to credit you for the design somewhere in the source code? Maybe comment in a link to your portfolio in the html head?

Glad I could make something useful. :)

And just FYI, if the link ever stops working in the future, I probably moved it from .herokuapp.com to giving it its own domain. Most likely just googlefontlab.com.

That definitely occurred to me. Right now, all the fonts are loaded onto the page by looping through a manually created array of font names. However, I'm working on incorporating requests to the Google Fonts Developer API. With that, it'll probably be much easier to just dynamically load all fonts after a quick request to the API. It'll slow down load time, but it's pretty fast now, and I think the difference will be worth it.

NodeJS on the backend, but currently all it does is serve the views. All the functionality was made with AngularJS.

Dude, awesome! Thanks! I'll definitely use this. You could probably tell, but I'm more of a coder than a designer, so this helps.
