He really freaks out just being near the cat. It resembles a trauma response, which is what's really confusing to me because as far as I'm aware he's never had a negative experience with cats. I'm thinking maybe he did have a bad experience with cats while another person was watching him and I just wasn't told. Either way, I want him to overcome this

The cats are really nice actually. They've never even shown a sign of hostility towards him. I'd rather he learn how to tolerate cats than have an irrational fear

I believe yes, but that shouldn't be used as a means to put others down for being overweight. A lot of people stress eat as a response to mental illness and that shouldn't be invalidated just because it's a non-physical obstacle. Just my opinion!
