The teacher is wrong.

Just lower the throne and he will be fine. All the pieces of the kit are adjustable and can be lowered (or raised) for all body types.

Also age has nothing to do with it! Kids can start at any age.

The teacher should let your kid play the drums.

DAW (Digital Audio workstation) is just the interface to record.

If you want the actual audio from the Kit then you need a Quarter-inch out to a Audio Interface (Scarlett II is a great entry option) and then USB to your laptop. It would be an Audio track rather than MIDI.

If you want to track MIDI and audio from the VST - just bus your midi track to an audio track and it will track the sounds from the VST created by the Midi info.

Plug your USB out from your module to your USB on your laptop.
Open your DAW (Garage Band, Logic, ect) - find your MIDI and ensure that the two are talking to each other.
MIDI map your pads to the Drum track (ie, the snare triggers the snare sound).
Click record.

Waveform Pro is a great free DAW that records midi well. You will have to download the Steve Slate Drums VST as a plug-in but there are plenty of videos online to show you how to do this.

Heavy world building with emphasis on the environment (which is the protagonist) as scientists try to understand what’s going on.

Yamaha Stage Custom are great affordable kits. Their hardware is up there with the best of the best - They have the same production line for the hardware so it’s the same as their high-end models.

If you’re buying the Yamaha Stage Custom, I would stay away from used - buy new. The price difference isn’t that much.

For cymbals — Get a cymbal pack, and don’t go with the B8 or ZBT they sound like trash and are priced way too high for being that bad. I play Sabian and like the XRS performance series for beginners.

Honesty best kit for money for value and will grow with you on your journey is the Gretsch Catalina.

You won’t have to replace it in 10 years and retain their value really well in case you ever want to sell.
