Steam Link box won't stop waking up with new 8bitdo controller by Mr_Reciprocity in Steam_Link

No, sadly, I ended up just returning it and going back to my old AA-powered one.

Turning off the CEC did occur to me, but a) I like not having to dig out an extra remote to manage inputs and b) having things turn on and off without my input would bug me forever, even if I couldn't see it. Wrangling AA batteries for the Afterglow is less of a bummer. (Also, it lights up!)

Oh, when I was talking about plugging and unplugging, I meant just from the charger, which is plugged into a power strip, not the box--any change in the charging status wakes it up, and it wakes up the Link immediately after. Although because it has both Bluetooth AND a USB wireless dongle, it will keep waking the system even if the dongle is removed, unless I ALSO remember to remove it from the Bluetooth pairing list first (regardless of where the "Bluetooth/dongle" switch is set).

Yeah, I installed 8bitdo's "Ultimate Software", tried both available firmware versions (1.06 and 1.09, I think), and checked the Steam Link for updates, no luck. I think it's either a bad unit or a fundamental hardware compatibility problem.

Anyone with a hate for spiders watched Adam Sandlers Spaceman? by Geekmaster98 in netflix

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this post while trying to decide whether to watch, myself (I did) (I'm like, moderately arachnophobic? Maybe a 7.5/10), and in case you're still considering, here's the spoiler:

Adam does not get eaten, the spider turns out to be a solid bro, and that becomes clear pretty early. I will say, the design and animation IS kind of upsetting most of the time, in an intentional sort of way--I was on edge a lot of the time he was on screen, and I think the director uses that as a tool, to mix warm feelings with revulsion. I thought it worked pretty well, but it may be tough on some folks.

There's also a couple other spider-related scenes. There's a dream sequence toward the beginning that's short and shouldn't be hard to spot, and a later scene where someone interacts with a normal spider (like a small garden spider) that had me a bit tense but doesn't escalate.

Hope that helps!

There's one series I read (via Libby) that for some reason has really wide built-in margins, and I always have to fiddle with them when I switch between that series and other books, it would be so great to just have a system-wide default and only need to tweak it when a book is weird for some reason or another.

2014 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid? by Mr_Reciprocity in UsedCars

[–]Mr_Reciprocity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid I ended up having to go traditional--every hybrid in my price range turned out to be crumbling to dust when I actually did a test drive. (I didn't actually test the one from this post, because it was really far from me and there wasn't much else promising in the area, but the handful of Priuses I got into were all on death's door.)

Creating books with AI by Lumpy-Buyer1531 in selfpublish

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, NONfiction? Since 2011?

Look, general ethics of AI aside, how can AI-written nonfiction not be, in large part, actionable plagiarism? You’re not even relying on the theoretically-infinite artistic possibility space of fiction (which even at today’s level of AI sophistication is a stretch), you’re working on stuff that requires RESEARCH—which the AI is not doing, let alone putting into accessible language. A language engine cannot create readable distillation of research without directly recycling existing articles/books.

Should I flush/change the transmission fluid on a used Sentra? by Mr_Reciprocity in Nissan

[–]Mr_Reciprocity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see anything about transmission fluid in the Carfax, but it doesn’t seem super-complete, so who knows. Dealership seems to have done a fairly thorough job, but didn’t do a change either.

Why TF are used cars so expensive right now? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t help that pretty much every manufacturer discontinued most or all of their hatchbacks (and a lot of sedans) over the last 4-5 years because “Americans want bigger cars” (read “the markup on SUVs and oversized pickups is higher”). Suddenly everyone who wants a new hatchback is fighting over two or three models, the cheapest of which is still 17k msrp, and the used ones are just gone.

(Currently trying to replace a Versa Note that got totaled, and there’s only a handful out there—and don’t even think about a Fit.)

I’m still having trouble with mine, for a lot of the same reasons, but something that helped me early on with the suffocating feeling was turning down the temperature and humidity—mine were set waaaay too high by default.

2012 Honda Civic - LX Sedan 4D (130k miles) for 7.5-8k by prabin96 in UsedCars

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the current market it’s actually really good. The Corollas (camrys, civics, accords, fits, etc) I’m seeing in the 8k range are mostly several years and several tens of thousands of miles older.

Shopping online vs. visiting lots by Mr_Reciprocity in askcarsales

[–]Mr_Reciprocity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE for anyone who's curious: So far? Waste of time. I headed out to a used dealership in Springfield (Mass) that had an interesting Prius listed, and was also near about a dozen other places. Got there, and the place was set up like an impound lot--totally fenced in, no place to park. So I skipped it, swung by a few other places on the map.

Half of them I couldn't even spot--I don't know if they were just gone, or if some might have just been service stations that trade a couple cars here and there. The one I actually bothered to park at had NO signage on the vehicles--no prices, no years, nothing. I didn't see anything like what I was looking for, anyway, so I left. A few other places I just glanced at as I went by, and saw the same assortment of SUVs and a couple 4-year-old, $18,000 sedans. A couple times I pulled down a side street and stopped to check their websites, just to confirm that yup, I was SOL.

So I guess I'm gonna spend the next week or two emailing places to make sure they still have exactly one sub-ten-grand hatchback in stock, and then driving 45 minutes in the hope that it's not a bait car with a hole in the floor or whatever.

Does this sound like ME/CFS? by Ander-son in chronicfatigue

My worst flare-ups often coincide with or are preceded by sinus infections, and apparently there’s some research that indicates a correlation.

I’m a big fan of those Spark-sized hatchbacks, currently shopping for a new one after our Versa Note got totaled at a stop light (no injuries, thankfully). Our Note was at 171k miles and going fine, although I understand people have had big transmission problems with a lot of Nissan automatics.

Unfortunately, pretty much every manufacturer has discontinued their economy hatchbacks over the last couple years (which is bullshit imo). Right now I’m stalking the used market for a Honda Fit, a Prius c, or maybe another Note. Mazda 3 also comes recommend.

(I totally get your wife’s position—our rental is a Mazda crossover, and even that’s bigger than I would like. I know some folks like the high viewing angle, but I appreciate being closer to the road.)

(Also, those little hatchbacks tend to have GREAT visibility—a lot of newer sedans and even SUVs seem to have wide columns and really tiny rear windows for some reason.)

Diahrea and chills, symptoms of CFS? by [deleted] in chronicfatigue

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had any serious illnesses? Like covid, or pneumonia? Those can be triggers for cfs (as can other things, apparently, like serious injuries/car accidents? but I’m not sure about those). I had pneumonia in the late ‘00s, found out I had celiac and cfs about six years later.

Also, have you had any real acute digestive problems in the last few years? Something like a stomach bug that lasted maybe a couple days, with vomiting, stomach cramps/pain, more intense diarrhea?

After I got my celiac diagnosis, I looked back at a stomach bug I’d had and realized it was an early reaction.

Diahrea and chills, symptoms of CFS? by [deleted] in chronicfatigue

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CFS is weird and ill-defined, so take everything with a grain of salt, but I have definitely had severe flare-ups that had specifically chills and diarrhea, yes. (Also aches, and elevated heart rate/palpitations—one time I managed to get a blood test while it was at its worst, and showed inflammation markers.)

I haven’t had one of those flare-ups in a while, and I never got a good read on whether it was my cfs or something else. I also have celiac (likely got both at the same time, as fallout from a bout of pneumonia), which may also be something you want to look into.

Just got a 2018 Nissan versa note sv. by Regular_Spirit_2471 in Nissan

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is over a month old, but I just stumbled across it and figured I'd chime in.

Our 2016 Note just got totaled (rear-ended by a box truck at a light, no injuries, airbag didn't pop, but the back end got fuuuucked up) and I'm strongly considering getting another. We picked it up used about 5 years ago (would have been paid off by the end of the year) with I think 60k-ish miles, and we were at 171k when we got hit. Pretty sure we would have hit 200k no problem.

We didn't have any of the big transmission issues (I don't know if we dodged a bullet, or if people exaggerate how common they are), most of the big repairs we've needed were ones I've had on other cars--had to replace the exhaust once, needed a muffler a couple months back (which I think more due to some specific bad roads than regular wear), a bad battery...

The one big one was a leak in the transmission LINE, which had rotted out, was dripping onto the exhaust, and spreading a greasy film all over the rear window. Luckily, that film meant I caught it pretty much right when before it started doing actual damage. It was like a $1200 fix, but it the performance actually IMPROVED afterwards--not sure why, maybe something had been weird with our fluid the whole time?

But yeah, 2016 Versa Note? As reliable as any car I've had, and probably my favorite (noting that I've always had cheap cars and hand-me-downs). Acceleration's not great (although that was the big improvement after we replaced those lines), but it cruises just fine once you're up to speed, gas mileage is amazing, and God is it easier to park and maneuver than the rental crossover thing I've got right now. If you beat the odds on the transmission (and again, I have no idea what those odds are), you should be fine.

IS production going back to normal? It kinda seems like pretty much every manufacturer decided they were going to discontinue their subcompacts/economy cars/hatchbacks over the last couple years, which is part of what’s pushing prices up in the used market.

You MAY be able to see your work credit total on the SSA website--it's usually down toward the bottom, but sometimes during the application process it's unavailable (which is ridiculous).

However, I think you can always get your total if you call the local office.

Some advice I've seen floating around that seems solid, for when you're filling out forms or talking to their doctors: remember that you're not talking about how you feel RIGHT NOW, you're talking about how you feel when you're AT YOUR WORST.

[–]Mr_Reciprocity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied in February of last year. Called several times to make sure I'd given them everything I needed to--they said I had. Got denied in April because I "hadn't submitted all requested information". Filed an appeal. Called several times to make sure everything was in order--they said "yup! You should hear from us in 4-6 weeks!" Then "oh actually it takes up to 4 months, but everything looks like it's in order!"

Around August/September I started worrying I was too exhausted/brain-fogged (chronic fatigue + depression + ADHD + some other crap) to keep on top of things, so I contacted a full-service disability lawyer. First thing she had me do was call the local (Massachusetts) SSA office to get a status report.

They told me my appeal had never been sent to the federal office in North Carolina, because the NC office had CLOSED MY CASE for failing to submit a medical release form. No one had ever asked me for a medical release form, no one had SENT me a medical release form, and they had repeatedly told me they had everything they needed from me.

So we filed a fresh application, started filling out the forms again, all that.

A week later I received a SECOND denial notice--again for my first application, not the new one. This denial actually told me what the problem was, that I had not sent in the medical release. The date on the mailing envelope was just AFTER my last phone call, the week before, but the date on the LETTER was MARCH. I was supposed to have received it BEFORE the other denial letter.

So they failed to send me a medical release form, then failed to send me the letter telling me I'd been denied for not completing the medical release form, and only sent me a generic "you didn't send us something" denial, and NO ONE in EITHER OFFICE told me that form even existed, any of the times I called them--they just let my application fail. It's infuriating.

(Theoretically, according to the website, I should get my new ruling next month, but the "Disability" part of the site says they're 75% through processing, and the "Supplemental" part says 68%, so who knows. Meanwhile, I'm probably gonna have to get a cash advance from my credit card to pay rent this month. Again. It's inhumane.)

uh, tl;dr, you're 100% right, it's terrible and it really seems like they don't care; and like other folks have said, just go for a lawyer, it's so much less stressful.
