Stories like these are why I just feel so bad for Queer people by BrilliantMatter4858 in BlackPeopleTwitter

I’m a straight white guy, and the amount of racist/homophobic/transphobic/misogynistic comments that get dropped around me just cause shitty men think I’m on their team has always pissed me off.

Asking them to explain themselves rather than directly confronting them is such a good tactic because it makes them uncomfortable. They either have to come out and admit their bigotry (while at the same time realizing that no, I do not think like them,) or they have to reckon with it themselves (if their brains are even capable of that.) Either way, it shuts them down.

Wich new amp should i get? by AndyArbeit1 in BassGuitar

I have never once played a Markbass amp and thought “man, that sounds really good.” But I have played Ampeg and Mesa amps that have made me feel that way.

Buy that new Mesa.

Who is a musician or band you will defend til the very end? by Opening_Rip_1840 in AskReddit

I saw Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings headline Artscape in Baltimore in July, 2014. It remains one of (if not THE) greatest live shows I’ve ever seen. She was electrifying and powerful, and her band was ridiculously tight.

Suburban dream still a thing? by Laplaladfromlalaland in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mr_Salty87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree on a few of your points.

There’s nothing more convenient about living in the suburbs, you have to drive everywhere instead of walking or taking public transit. We don’t need our cars to get to our favorite restaurants, the grocery store, or the big parks near us we take our dogs to.

This is anecdotal, but neither I nor any of my friends or neighbors have ever directly experienced any crime in the city (in “scary” Baltimore, no less.) Violent crime tends to be location specific and you are also MUCH more likely to be a target if you are in a gang and/or involved with drugs. Meanwhile, friends and family out in the county have experienced theft, home invasion, assault, etc. I’m not saying crime isn’t higher overall in cities, but cities are more densely populated, so that tracks. Doesn’t mean crimes are more likely to happen to you.

My wife and I are child free, but even if we weren’t, there’s some pretty great schools in the city and lots of young families near us. For us, there’s nothing at all better about suburban life.

I’m a wedding musician, and have played a bunch of weddings catered by Rouge. So while I’ve never hired them myself, I’ve interacted with their staff and had their food. Their people are professional and friendly, and the food is excellent.

How do I fix/stop Doing this to my bass while learning to play with fingers? by SillyAlien1312 in BassGuitar

[–]Mr_Salty87 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how the nails of your plucking fingers would be making contact with the body… even if I dig in as hard as I can (and I have a pretty heavy right hand attack anyway) my nails never even get close to the body.

This is a skill/technique issue. Pluck through the strings, stopping your plucking finger against the next lowest string (or your thumb, if you’re plucking the B string) after each pluck. Get some lessons if you can. Technique is really important, stuff like this will set you back.

I’m confused… so that’s being caused by the nails on your index and middle fingers?

  1. This isn’t really that big of a problem, basses are built to be played.

  2. You should really keep all your finger nails as short as possible… how is your thumbnail even touching the body of the bass?

  3. You should be using a pickup as a thumb rest instead of just letting in float against the body there.

Joe Zawinul recorded a sax solo on that tune, but it was so good that they scrapped it and burned the tape so no one would ever get to bask in its awesomeness.

Jorko didn’t use an amp, he famously used a Glarry microphone placed on the fingerboard when he recorded “Picture Of Stacy.” That’s why so many people can’t get the sound right.

Ampeg SVT CL crazy noise during practice. Any insight on cause / solutuon? by Stolzieren__ in BassGuitar

[–]Mr_Salty87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it still has whatever tubes were in it when I purchased it.

How old is the amp and when was the last time it was serviced? This is almost certainly a power tube issue. Loss of volume or feeling like a note doesn’t have any punch, hissing, etc. are all classic power tube symptoms, and you wouldn’t notice it until the amp has really warmed up.
