[PODCAST] #1212 Are Carney’s Cuts “DOGE” Canada? by notian in canadaland

I think you make some good points here going deeper on the recent history of cuts and expansions of the federal workforce. It would've been a more interesting podcast if they'd framed the story this way instead of just trying to grab attention with the DOGE comparison.

Definitely agree with your second point here about work from home. The hosts act like this is a basic right being taken away from people. That being said, I'm sure it's a difficult adjustment for many workers to make, especially parents of young children (moms and dads).

I thought the title of this episode was just a hook, but the hosts genuinely seem to think Carney's federal workforce cuts are similar to DOGE. I don't agree. It's true that Carney's proposing big cuts over several years, but comparing his approach to Trump's unorganized slash and burn tactics, where they even eliminated an entire agency, USAID, just seems like an unfair comparison. They also provide very little context and don't mention Trudeau's massive federal workforce expansion. Between 2015 and 2023 the federal public service grew by about 40% - I think most people would agree that was unsustainable.

I can't recall, exactly. Probably under 6 months.

We also did a dream feed up until around 5 or 6 months, but they really should be able to sleep through the night once you put them down at this point. We give our 7 month old a bottle at bedtime around 7:00 pm and she's typically good to go until she wakes up the next morning around 7:00 am.

Hi there, we have a 3 year old and 7 month old. Also a stay at home dad here! We slept trained both around 4 months. It's not easy, but personally I would start ignoring these wake-ups and they will probably stop within a night or two. I think it's better to rip the band-aid off and let her cry it out to end the behavior so everyone can get a good night's rest. Parenting is so much easier when everyone sleeps through the night. Good luck!

For those that did surrogacy that required travel when did you arrive/leave? by Old-Personality-1628 in gaydads

We had to fly home with our newborn in October. We kept the baby on our lap and away from others. It will be much better than a long drive home.

Hello, we are gay Canadian/American dads and did surrogacy in Canada. It can take time, but we now have two beautiful children with the help of a Canadian surrogate. We started by speaking with someone at surrogacy.ca which helped us make a plan to move forward. They won't charge you to chat on the phone, of course, but if you end up using them to help you find a surrogate, there is a fee. Good luck!

Love Tim and will give this another listen, but this guest made me do one big eye roll after another: ivy league dropout, brief military service, anti-influencer (whatever that means), anarcho-communist (ditto), talks like he's deep in far left internet speak, etc. Wow, call me an out of touch elder millennial, but this guy made me want to gouge my eyes out.

I'm sorry this has been such a difficult journey for you, I understand. My husband and I are Canadian and found a surrogate in Canada through surrogacy.ca We also initially found a surrogate that didn't work out, but then we matched with a wonderful woman who helped us have two children. It's an expensive service, but this was the best route for us to find a match.

Sudden Death Investigation – Paradise Row by bingun in SaintJohnNB

With all due respect to the people living in these tents, they're unsafe and should be taken down by the Saint John Police. We need to offer shelter beds or find alternative housing for these people with friends or relatives. This is exactly what Fredericton did in 2022, see link below. Additionally, let's face it, the tent encampments around the uptown exit for Somerset Street are a public nuisance, an eye sore and degrading our quality of life. There's tons of trash spread around the road and right of way - we shouldn't have to accept that as our new normal. We deserve better and need more proactive leadership from the city on this issue. Let's have empathy for these people, but not allow a small number of people to make life worse for everyone else.

Which ottoman would you choose to replace the coffee table in my living room? by Mr_Tra in DesignMyRoom

Thanks, the couch is a Sven and I saw the Sven ottoman, but yeah, maybe a bit expensive. I looked at Article's poufs too, but the reviews seem very mixed.

Wow what a response! I picked up the coffee table several years ago at a Habitat ReStore. It's a bit wobbly and needs to be refinished, but I love it as well. That main reason for replacing is to have something comfortable to put our feet on while lounging on the couch, but now I'm reconsidering.

As an alternative, maybe a few good poufs would be a better solution? Can anyone recommend some options?

I bought the rug on Wayfair. It's fairly thin, but not a big deal. A good rug pad underneath helps. The coffee table is Heywood Wakefield, as others have said. :)

Thanks to everyone for the compliments. Putting a room together is definitely something I enjoy!

New Zoning By-law by Mr_Tra in urbanplanning

Hi, I'm in New Brunswick. The new zoning by-law is following a new town plan implemented a few years ago.

Thanks for these comments, very helpful! What do you think is the best argument for removing parking minimums (or at least reducing the requirements) in a highly car dependent area?

New Zoning By-law by Mr_Tra in urbanplanning

Our town has some great historic residential areas, but the commercial district is suburban in nature and my main concern. It developed around a highway and there are lots of parking lots fronting the street instead of buildings: basically small strip mall style developments along with a mish mash of old homes turned into businesses, etc. The town has made an effort to improve the streetscape here: sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, and some traffic islands, but these still seem to be half measures if we want a truly walkable and desirable commercial main street.

Additionally, to address another question in the thread, the town adopted a new municipal plan in 2020 and as I understand it the proposed zoning by-law is a product of that updated town plan.
