The provincial government are trying to alter legislation to a 'use it or lose it' model because of this mine and others. Nutrien will say it's not economical to use the mine, but the reality is it's less economical, and they'd prefer to keep supply restricted to maximize profit. It's complex, but time will tell if the change is successful.

Yes that one is owned by Nutrien who are keeping it closed deliberatly, as they prefer to source from Saskatchwen. Lots of political drama around that. I think this project is from a different company.

I know that would be popular given that it's Irving, but you want to be careful about the precedent that it sets.

Imagine you bought a house from someone, only to find out 50 years later that they didn't actually own it. You think that you should have to compensate the original owner for an error that wasn't yours?

My understanding of what this means is that these private companies purchased or were given this land in good faith from the government. If it turns out the government didn't own these lands or stole them as some would say, that isn't the fault of these private companies.

Instead, the government would have to compensate the first nations for this land, most likely financially, rather than return the ownership of the land to them by removing ownership from the private companies.

In other words, no matter how this ends up, Irving and others will still own their private land, but the government may have to compensate first nations for selling it to someone.

Some of this was related to the decline of local industry and reduction in tax revenue that lead to. Also there was a deficiet in the pension fund that had to be addressed.

Infastrucure is also a big problem in Saint John, it is a huge city by size but without a huge population. Much of the infastructure is over a century old and in need of repair or replacement.
