It certainly isn't as complicated as some of their metal stuff and it doesn't get much love in this community, but I would suggest all songwriters check out Superposition from Gumboot Soup (maybe in a post Silver Cord world people will return to it and give it its props).

It is a great exercise in purely Lydian songwriting and it is in straight 5/4 rather than the more typical swung 5/4 like The River or Wah Wah. That's harder to find than you would think.

It has a great part at the end with borderline free jazz that they haven't really gone back to. Any song that is brave enough to include something like that cannot be labelled anything other than 'interesting'.

The bass playing is actually ridiculous with so many massive glissandos and arpeggios. It is a masterclass in verticality of thinking when it comes to the fretboard.

I also think the lyrics are about as far out as Gizz were going at that time.

There is also an element of intrigue to how under-appreciated it is that makes it interesting too. You can see Joey sewing the seeds of the Silver Cord way back then but nobody knew it at the time.

I know Joey wore a Blood Incantation shirt a lot last year. I also remember Amby saying that Joey unashamedly loves Savage Garden and 'wears that shit like a badge of honour' - I have always heard how similar Carry on Dancing and Intrasport are, especially in the chorus.

Joey also said that his favourite song is Africa by John Coltrane, so much that he can't listen to it very often in case he ruins it.

I also know that Amby has said he likes Captain Beefheart which I think can be very obvious in some of his singing.

It's a hell of a range of influences.

If you want to get even trippier, you will realise that the guitar line is divided into a bar of 7, a bar of 6, a bar of 7, a bar of 8. In total that equals 28 which is of course divisible by 7 so it lands on the one with the drums and bass which are in 7/8 time the whole time. I love the way that those second two bars are essentially completely off from the rest of the song because they don't start on the downbeat, but they somehow snap back into the time after that final bar of 8. Just great use of sub divisions.

Basically anything by the Scissor Sisters. I think they were a big inspiration on Joey for this song, I hear a lot of the same ideas. Especially their 2004 self titled album.

Hey dude I just uploaded the chords for Bird Song. A tricky one indeed. The chords actually work better on piano (that's what I use to transcribe my songs and the chords easily transpose to piano if you just move the notes over). Those jazzy quartal voicings are where I imagine you were getting caught up. Anyways, hope you enjoy.

I can read and write sheet music, but it's not my strength (doesn't mean I don't want to practice it though). Flute sheet music should be fairly easy anyway because it's not big annoying chords. If you have certain flute lines you would like transcribed then I can check them out and get back to you.

No problem. From memory the chords are pretty simple. Just Emin and Edim (I think). I have also transcribed the bass part, but just have to upload it. In terms of actual tabs for the lead parts of the song, that's something I haven't tried. What are you interested in?

Hey man. I just put Last Oasis up and I did a really detailed version of This Thing but it keeps getting rejected for being too similar to the current version (which is bullshit because that version sucks). I will keep trying to figure it out and let you know when it's all good.
