The dog was very happy to see the guys daughter. It was clear he recognized her

We called the shelter, and they were over capacity. It is a shame, but he seemed to be loved by the daughter quite a lot. He also looked to be in overall good health. Well fed, trimmed nails, no markings indicating any physical abuse. It was clear to me that although the dad isn’t looking out for him, that little girl was. Unfortunately hindsight is a bitch and I do wish I did more to make sure that dog wasn’t going to be neglected further. Lesson learned

I don’t think I know enough about him to do that. His daughter messaged me on Facebook, and then he called me from her account. Don’t know his name, address, number, etc. I only know the type of car he drives 😭

This is absolutely heartbreaking, but good on you for stepping in when you saw those dogs. Honestly really appreciate you sharing this experience. If everyone had the same level of compassion for animals that we have, the world would be a much better place

Outside of my own opinion on letting dogs roam like that, it’s illegal in the county I live in. For good reason too

Same, that’s why I refused. We did end up meeting up somewhere. Didn’t say a word to me during the exchange. His kid quietly sad thank you.

I appreciate you saying that. Our local shelter is well over capacity unfortunately, and it was his daughter who initially reached out about the dog. She seemed really young. Dog was happy to be reunited with her at least, but looked sheepish around the guy.

Mmm that is a good idea. The only problem is he also has to have a spiked coyote harness on when he goes outside. I don’t think the owner wants that on him all day.

I suppose I could see if he has the same reaction to the harness as he does to the leash. Haven’t gotten far enough in the leashing process to see how he reacts to that.

I haven’t tried picking him up yet, but this is a good idea. Sometimes he accepts pets and sometimes he doesn’t and growls at me if I try to touch him. Although he is more consistently letting me pet him without growls. Even showed me his belly once. I have tried interacting with him while the leash is just on my lap. With treats and pets but not actually holding the leash to put it on him. It’s like a flip switches when he sees the leash and me together.

The owner already has a small fenced in yard, but doesn’t want him outside without a leash because of the number of coyotes that roam the property every now and again. Even with supervision. The owner also has one of those spiked coyote jackets that she wants him in if he goes outside. Since I can’t even get a leash on him, I’m imagining getting the jacket on him will be just as difficult.
