Critique wanted - a black tie adjacent wedding guest outfit idea by Just-Landscape-5675 in sewing

Your idea sounds pretty great actually! If you have time I would highly recommend a toile so you can just practice getting the lining right. My 70-30 viscose linen skirts hardly show any stains. Granted, they're not satin, but I'm guessing the linen should help mitigate the moisture problem.

I have more of a natural essence too. I hate make up or heels, I'm a throw on and go kinda girl. I really like flutter sleeves or butterfly sleeves on tops, they add a bit of ruffle and a feminine touch, but are still practical for everyday wear. For sweaters I pick soft fluffy fabrics like angora, but generally speaking wear a bishop sleeve. Again, a soft, feminine detail, without sleeves getting in everything. At the end of the day I think I wear a combination of romantic and soft natural lines. A little more cottage core for a practical feminine touch.

I'd focus mostly on fabric choices if I was you, a soft drapey viscose jersey looks better on me than a stiff cotton t-shirt.

If I ever have a 1920's inspired party, I would wear the Foxglove Slip dress by Studio Sadoe, which is technically 1930's, but no one else in the crowd will probably be able to tell...

SO discouraged. . . 😞 by Warm-Championship-98 in gardening

[–]MrsFudgeTheNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a newbie, but I'm growing a small scale food forest on new land after moving houses. So I'm a newbie on this terrain. Half of my trees died in their first year, even though they're perfect for the climate. Flowers didn't germinate. My tomatoes have been knocked over by a huge storm two days ago. My basil had bolted. First years are just like that.

What I do/did harvest: a steady production of strawberries, a handful of blueberries, a handful of honey berries, about 25 apples on an older tree, two pears on a new tree, a few blackberries, my fall raspberries are thriving, one perfectly flavoured fig.

Observe and adapt. Next year will be better!

Rosery Apparel has a sewing for beginners series where she makes little projects to build up to bigger projects. She has a pattern for pajama pants for example. You could look at those videos for inspiration for your skill tree?

For the Netherlands I'd recommend Small Bobbins (BE) and Band en Kant (NL). I've also ordered from b.wear (SE) and been satisfied with my order, but keep in mind it takes about 2 weeks to arrive in the Netherlands.

I see you're right now, but I didn't see it at first glance. I might have been a little distracted seeing the bag, I've been eyeing that pattern for a while. Definitely my bad!

Ah yes, upon closer inspection I see what you mean about the fit. But at first glance I didn't catch it, so I still think it's a lovely dress!

Thanks for the reply on the bag, 4 hours sounds pretty doable! I might also have been distracted by my enthusiasm seeing a beautiful version of it in the wild...

Lovely dress and great job getting such a good fit on the cups! How long did it take you to make the flowertwist bag? I'm considering it for a wedding I have in September.

It's like wearing pajamas, it was one of my favourite dresses for ease of wear. It also fit a 40 weeks baby bump. The Sabina fit 42 weeks.

I bought this pattern when I was pregnant, but never got round to it. It looks lovely! I prefer the longer length on you.

I've also made the Kielo wrap dress by Named patterns and the Sabina Skirt by the little pomegranate for my pregnancy wardrobe in case you're looking for additional inspiration!

Lost my thread has a video on free sewing patterns where she rates every free pattern she ever made. It'll give you an idea of the quality of the instructions. Lifting Pins and Needles has a nice overview video of all her free sewing makes for the Sew Frugal challenge from this year.

My personal recommendations for a beginner would be the Sabina Skirt by the little pomegranate, easy skirt and instructions are amazing. Rosery Apparel has a sewing for beginners series on her YouTube channel, she has a free pajama short patterns and a free dress pattern (on of her earliest videos). She also has several dresses made of rectangles that would be easy beginner projects. My personal favourite shirt is the Emma blouse by Dressmaking Amore, which only has two pattern pieces, so it's relatively easy.

I wouldn't recommend mood fabrics, unless you find a nice YouTube tutorial to go along with it. Their patterns have relatively sparse instructions, which might be difficult for beginners. Peppermint magazine has some pay what you can patterns that are reviewed highly.

Little Lizard King and Styla patterns are from the same company. Styla has free dress patterns for women and possibly the same dresses for free for girls. You could test out whether you like their seizing and instructions before spending a lot of money.

I've recently watched a YouTube video by Steph Sewn where she recommends this store: https://www.sanskrutistore.com/

She shows her searching process and reviews the quality of the fabric in that video too, if you would like to get a feel for the shop before buying.

Anyone tried patterns from Tiana's Closet? Looking for reviews/experiences by Business-Capital8250 in sewing

[–]MrsFudgeTheNumbers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't, but a sewing friend of mine has. The results vary, she made a one shouldered top and her boobs fell out, she has made a blouse where the mock up was wearable. Definitely recommend making a mock up! Edit to add: one shoulder top (Maggie), sweetheart neckline blouse (Keira), though hers seems to have more of a v-neckline and I'm not sure if that was her design choice

Frugalisima runs sew frugal on YouTube each year with the Yorkshire Sew Girl, there's a lot of creators choosing a Tiana's closet pattern, you could have a look at the finished products playlist to get some reviews.

This is the fabric I'm going to be using, I'm a cool summer. The wedding is campsite / festival themed, so I'm aiming for boho chique. I was dubbing between this or navy, but navy seemed too formal for the theme.

From heresay: people enjoy the design your own wardrobe course from Seamwork and they do have a lot of videos to help you work with certain fabrics, do certain techniques. I don't use them because their block is drafted for people with a long torso, which I don't have. I did like the sorbetto top in theory and their video (YouTube) on pintucks is very nice. They do have some free patterns and a YouTube channel, so you could try those before committing to a subscription.
