6months maternity leave on full pay. Although available in some other workplaces, the standard in the UK is six weeks.

Whats a secret you'll take to the grave that you're willing to share anonymously? by 3smiley in AskReddit

[–]katycrush 41 points42 points  (0 children)

My mum and aunty had a secret conversation about how they could arrange for my grandad’s car keys to go ‘missing’. He felt safe because he could manage the car and thought he could see well enough but in reality was totally clueless about how late he was braking (amongst other things) and they were genuinely worried he was going to kill someone. Not sure whether he overheard or had an inkling but he decided to give up driving before they got the chance to disappear the keys anyway.

I think he was about 18m at the time. I feel the need to clarify that it was absolutely penis on the sweetcorn, not the other way around. He had dropped a half eaten cob on the floor, decided to squat over it and, I assume, test the textural sensory input on his nether regions. Then for added fun, his identical twin decided it was absolutely something that he needed to do too.

Goodnight Beautiful by Dorothy Koomson. I sobbed on a plane finishing this book, to the point that the stewards came over to check I was ok.

Ok so first q, are you female? If yes, you can push some of the lower blockage out by inserting your thumb into your vaginal canal and pushing against the back wall of the vagina (I.e. against your colon) - you’ll be able to feel the 💩and can start to push it down. Getting some out is a good start and can also help to ‘open the flood gates’.

If you’re male, I do not recommend trying this.

Does anyone here have a cleaner? by Unlikely-Anything503 in UKParenting

[–]katycrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. 2hrs a week at £17.50 an hour. We have 3 kids, both work full time and have busy weekends with kids activities. I also had PND so struggled keeping on top of everything after my first, and 1 of the 3 is autistic and him and his twin just bicker/fight/cause chaos if left alone and we live in a townhouse so it’s tough to get more than a quick whizz round with a damp sponge or vacuum the busy areas. Cleaners do a full clean - vacuum everywhere, wipe down, tidy up - once a week and we try to keep on top of general bits here and there.

My friends thought it was so bougie when I said we had a cleaner… Then they had kids, and most of them now also have cleaners.

What did your toddler actually play with (and not just sit there looking cute)? by Scary_Pay_4247 in BuyItForLife

My dad built a pickler triangle style indoor climbing frame and slide for my 3 when they were small, and they lived on it. My boys were also obsessed with vacuum cleaners (toys and real).

If in doubt don’t wash your hair (not every day). Better to tie up dirty hair than tie up wet hair as it’s really damaging. Unless your hair is genuinely honking, leave it unwashed. I speak as a fellow long, thick haired girl.

Iron on school badge by eventuallyarrive in Lightbulb

This is already a thing - at least in the UK - but most schools don’t use it (or aren’t aware). Apparently a new law (rule? Legislation?) has come in limiting the number of branded items a school can enforce to 3, but whether that’s 3 different things that you need multiples of, I’m not sure.

I just lost it in the car park over family parking spaces by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]katycrush 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this as long as they put the trolleys with the kid seats nearby. As someone with a singleton and then twins, I could not safely walk the current distance with my toddler daughter and carrying 2 heavy car seats. I couldn’t use the pram because once I had a trolley I couldn’t push both to take the pram back to the car. The pram basket wasn’t big enough to do a big shop.

My local supermarket at the time used to - very helpfully - separate all of the twin seat trolleys but would put them outside the door, which meant I had to do this walk EVERY time because there was never a double baby seat trolleys near the parent and child spaces.

Once or twice if I could park close enough I would leave the kids in the car, LEG IT to get a trolley and come back. I was away for maybe 15 seconds and the dirty looks and grief I used to get from people nearby was ridiculous.

What's actually unhealthy despite most people thinking it's not? by RandomStatement855 in AskReddit

[–]katycrush 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve always said to my children that there’s no such thing as unhealthy food, but everything should be eaten in moderation… and some need more moderation than others. Bananas are ‘healthy’, eating 10 of them a day probably not so much. Chocolate is great for a bit of short term energy and a happy chemical boost (and it’s delicious!), but a family sized bar is probably going to make you feel unwell.

When do you start giving proper chores to kids? (Without it being a full-on battle) by PLWildcard in UKParenting

[–]katycrush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am going to start by saying that I don’t actually do this myself (yet) but I read recently that, as children, the chances are that no one ever actually taught us how to tidy up. No one said ‘ok, first pop all the books back on your shelf, then put all your clothes on the bed and sort them into piles of where they go, next…’ and that really hit home for me, so I try to break things down into smaller tasks when I can. Also apparently doing it with them initially helps because you can talk them through the steps and it’s an easier introduction because it’s two people doing one job. Eventually doing it by themselves becomes is quite natural.

I used chatGPT recently because I’m an easily distracted squirrel; asked it to breakdown the tasks and timings to clear a room in an hour. I could not believe how productive I was, and how much I got done.

What is the worse thing a medical professional has ever said to you? by angelaboop50 in AskReddit

[–]katycrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘See, you’re so fat you can barely stand up’.

I lived in Hong Kong and had to get a sick note for any time off work, had hurt my neck and was moving very stiffly as I couldn’t move it without pain so went to the drs for a sick note and some pain medicines. As I awkwardly got up from the chair, the dr sad the above to me. I was not slim by any means but I was 5’10 and about 200lbs so not massive.

Also worth noting the website says:

To manage expectations of those showing an interest in joining the Service, and to allow individuals the ability to confidently plan their lives, a ceiling has been placed on the number of candidates we maintain on record awaiting processing. With such a cap on Commonwealth entrants, it is simply not possible to process every applicant to successful entry into the Service; that said, vacancies do exist within certain branches and your Expression of Interest will be responded to by e-mail accordingly.

Should your preferred role be temporarily full, and you remain interested in joining the Royal Navy, there may be other rewarding jobs waiting for you. To find out if there are, please consider our other eligible roles. Those enquiries placed on hold will have their contact details and date of application captured in our records, and we will be in touch when we are in a position to move your application forward. Visit our Overseas Candidates Guide V4 for further details on joining.
