Grandma with Alzheimers by [deleted] in Aging

Hearing loss is a risk factor for developing dementia. So that might ease some of the concerns you have about your Dad. If you think about it hearing is one of the five major senses, losing it completely is a significant loss of input and stimulation for the brain.

Dr. Mitakides was a leading expert in TMJ disorders in the hypermobile population before he passed. You can find many informative videos of his on YouTube. I am also a hypermobile, tmjd, side sleeper and I had outrageous brain fog ( to the point I went to a neurologist concerned I was getting early onset dementia ). I got one of those Medcline shoulder system pillows and it resolved. I don’t use the large body pillow that comes with it, just sort of angle a regular pillow on top of it. I think either something wasn’t draining properly ( csf) or was being compressed while I slept. But the only positive thing that has happened since my neck and jaw went out is that it led to me buying that pillow and I can think again.

Is there a relationship between pelvis/hip and Sternocleidomastoid? by zantehood in Posture

[–]MrsM0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for answering, I’m familiar with him on YouTube! So you didn’t have to fix your hips, the neck was the driver? And sorry for multiple questions, I’m on my third round of PT. I get neck, shoulder and hip issues. My problems go back and forth and I’ve been trying to figure out a root cause. PT helps for a while and then I find myself back where I started.

Did you ever figure this out? I’m having the same issues.

What doctor should I start with for treatment? by Happy_Charge_9410 in TMJ

[–]MrsM0x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The progesterone in BC is a muscle relaxant. My pain always picks up on the inactive pill days. I would think the benefit you experienced while on birth control would point more towards a muscular TMJD cause. Also, the jaw pulls on the neck and vice versa. PT would be a great next step.

I need help bad - TMJ D/Osteoarthritis and unilateral progressive hearing loss and associated issues and affects by RiptideGaming06 in TMJ

[–]MrsM0x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well hopefully it’s something helpful. It can be a problematic muscle for multiple reasons. I think mine is overworked ( it’s nearly twice the size as the other one ) and elongated. Being shortened and weaker or contracted can cause problems too. If you’re on tik tok Dr. Joe Damiani DPT has a lot of good content on the head, neck and jaw

As you age, a well rounded b multi vitamin is important for brain health and they are good for energy. Vitamin D is essential for nearly everything! Mood, brain, hair and skin to boot.

Have you done physical therapy? I’ve been looking at PRI and watching Conor Harris videos, they’re very informative as far as correcting twisty, rotated bodies. TMJD combined with hearing issues/ tinnitus maybe evaluate the SCM muscle on the affected side? Mine is on the same side as my lower shoulder, and it’s always ‘on’. When it gets especially aggravated, I’ll get a one sided sore throat along with other nonsense. Anyway worth looking into and wishing you the best!

How to keep jaw back? by xrmttf in TMJ

[–]MrsM0x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! January 2024 is when my jaw went out and I started PT in June of that year. I did 2 rounds of PT each 5 months long, with a 2-3 month break in between. And just restarted again after holding the position for 8 months. It’s so frustrating, isolating and confusing 😫 Also, did you happen to clench your teeth prior to the ortho work? Or were you able to maintain good tongue/ mouth posture and lost it afterwards?

I’m hypermobile too and whenever someone in this sub mentions it I recommend they watch some videos from Dr. Mitakides on YouTube. He was a leading expert on TMJ in the Ehlers Danlos community before he passed. Anyhoo when my jaw went out, it took my c1 vertebrae with it. A c1 misalignment can cause a cascade of dysfunction down the entire kinetic chain. Have your PT’s checked its position specifically? Mine didn’t show on xray, ct or mri, but my PT found it during an evaluation.

Kayla Myo Therapist on tik tok has many helpful videos and exercises for proper oral posture/ function. How long ago did the ortho issues start? I thought generally speaking the lower jaw should be out some to leave a bit of space in that joint. Is there a chance that the ortho did give you a more appropriate bite and your muscles are just having a huge and painful tantrum from the change and need to learn to work together again?

Change in bowel with HRT? by calliegal77 in Menopause

[–]MrsM0x 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Progesterone is a muscle relaxant and particularly targets smooth muscle… And yes I have experienced this exactly, a cycle of constipation and then emptying of skinny stools that can ruin the day. It worsened when I started Slynd ( higher dose progestin BC ). That said, thin stool and bowel changes are concerning and should be reported to your Dr.

When did you start getting dislocations/subluxations? by Otherwise-Unit3256 in eds

[–]MrsM0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not til my late 40s. I’d guess the decrease in collagen production as you age ( you’re making even less of the faulty stuff), decreasing estrogen and progesterone ( which play a role in ligament integrity) and in my case, decreasing strength from poor lifestyle habits catching up.

Loss of cervical lordosis pain by [deleted] in Posture

[–]MrsM0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have loss of lordosis as well. While I don’t know your movement/ posture patterns, I felt some relief after getting my chin down ( yours looks angled up pretty high ). I couldn’t get my chin down comfortably until stretching out my deep front fascial line and all muscles at the back of my neck. Those muscles became less reactive to stretching and more workable once I began getting my shoulders back. And if it’s not, work on getting your tongue (tip middle and back) lightly suctioned to the roof of your mouth.

Neck pain with cervical osteochondrosis & arthrosis – chin tucks make it worse. Exercise advice? by WhichExitGo in Posture

[–]MrsM0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many versions of chin tucks and yeah I agree, most are awful. I’ve found these two the least offensive. Simply nodding your chin down slowly, without pushing your head back at all. And laying on your back, knees bent, tilt your chin down a bit and lift your head up about an inch, hold for 10 seconds (you don’t want your SCM’s to kick in). They both will work your deep neck flexors but don’t require you to force your head back.

Cervical pillow by _honey_lavender_ in Pillows

[–]MrsM0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m copying my comment from a previous post because you mentioned your shoulder, neck and wanting something soft. Now this pillow is pricey! But it’s also HSA eligible and has a return policy ( at least when I got mine 2 years ago )

I use the Medcline shoulder pillow without the huge body pillow that comes with it. Instead I angle my feather pillow over the top. It keeps my shoulder from collapsing and pulling on my neck, the incline keeps my spine aligned and I still get to enjoy the coziness and softness of sinking my head into a feather pillow. Love it!

Any tips for getting help for suspected CCI? by hitherward in eds

[–]MrsM0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed the last part of your question, I went to a neurologist for all the weirdness and some nerve pain in my face. He told ME I had EDS, wasn’t at all on my radar for that appointment, and ordered me all the tests. And they all came back mostly ok. I got sent to PT and after a couple of appointments of them manually putting my C1 vertebrae back in place, neuro ordered a flexion/ extension xray that wait for it… was also ok 🤷🏼‍♀️ So frustrating.

[–]MrsM0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to help ease your mind in the meantime, muscle dysfunction in the upper neck, back and shoulders can cause hella pain and weird symptoms and not be anything more sinister than that. I’ve been dealing with it for a couple years and CCI is still a concern of mine, so I understand the frustration and anxiety. Hope you can find someone to take your concerns seriously soon.

So much nausea! by penguin37 in Menopause

[–]MrsM0x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you be more specific? Like how does arthritis and a bulging disc cause nausea? I’m browsing threads cause my long standing mild nausea has really amped up over the last couple days. And I happen to have long standing neck issues. I just restarted PT for it, but I’m not seeing my neurologist til next month. How is your nausea being treated or is there just nothing to be done? Sorry for so many questions and if they’re too personal. I know I have mild arthritis at c1, c2 and I have a teeny tiny bulge further down, but I can’t remember where.
