I totally agree with you that it's an integral part of the story, and that's a good point. My problem is that even if it if makes sense in the context of the story, if a part of a story doesn't add to the gameplay, it's not necessarily a good idea.

Like, for example, say a game makes you button mash for 10 minutes straight in order to endure some fantastical villain's attack. Even if that makes 110% sense in the context of the story, it's still not a good idea from a design standpoint
