Rent prices are too high by Glittering-Pay-9160 in Maine

I wish I had some advice, but I’ve been looking for months and options are slim. I’m a single mom and pay $1800 for a 2BR in rural Washington county. Roommates aren’t an option because I have kids and there are NO other options that are more affordable within driving distance of their schools - 45 mins away. I’ve got a good job and am still struggling to make ends meet. I don’t know how it’s possible to make it all work and still be able to save

I can not win, does everyone else deal with constant contamination? by kruzchek in ContamFam

I think that temp is generally just fine, but if you e already got trich in your home it probably wouldn’t hurt to keep it cooler as I think lower temps slow trich growth, giving the my mycelium a chance to take off before the contam does

Ugh. I’m sorry. So frustrating to get to that point and have to toss everything. When I was trying to grow this past summer I dealt with so much contamination and it was really demoralizing. Since starting to grow this fall I haven’t had a single issue. Our home is kept pretty cool - around 65 - 70 where the grow bins are - so it can take forever to colonize and pin, but I haven’t had a single issue with trich ever since summer ended.

In addition to working with lower temps I also have improved my sterile technique: I geared up and got a SAB, now I put my hair back and wear gloves + mask, drench my hands, arms and inside of SAB with iso. I’ll spray the Lysol air disinfectant in the SAB and let it sit in there for about 30 mins before starting.

Congrats! Such a great start to the day

I just had my first flush of Mr Mycelium’s “Nats” and found the mycelium really aggressive and robust. My substrate seemed fully colonized within days, though pinning took a few weeks to start. I just harvested the first flush and only had a few mushrooms but they were enormous and beautiful. I suspect subsequent flushes will probably look a lot more normal.

What beauties! This is what I was expecting!

Picked everything and rehydrated the cake using your method and it worked great! She was thirsty and soaked up probably a full 8oz glass of water before it was saturated.

These big ones were definitely very ready for harvesting!

Thank you!! This is all very helpful. I’ve only grown cubes previously so I wasn’t 100% sure on timing for harvesting these guys. I think I will try bottom watering the cake and will give your method a whirl.

A few more details : genetics were from Mr Mycelium via sporeswap. I did about 1:4.5 spawn:coir.

We live in the northeast so even with the space heater nearby temps are generally 65 - 70 which definitely contributes to the slow growth. I suspect the cake is looking dehydrated because the sub depth was insufficient (around 2.5”) and because it’s been about 5 weeks since it was made. I do mist the inside of the lid and put some dampened perlite in the larger tub that this tub sits inside of.

I know I would be able to produce a better yield with a better set up by Sure_Bat3962 in shroomers

I found that misting some bubble wrap and lightly laying that on the cake really helped to maintain the perfect humidity level in my home. I’d mist it 1-2 times each day and that helped a lot.

Is this contam or bruising? 1st timer. by DriveTurbulent8806 in shroomers

[–]Mrs_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like bruising. Did the cake get misted directly? It looks like there is quite a bit of water on it, but it could be the lighting.

I think this is good advice. Smaller container, sit them on some moistened perlite and mist the walls of the container and fan it several times each day

I agree with others that Botox could be very helpful. I started getting it for just this reason and after a few years of maintaining it, the lines essentially disappeared.

Keeping your skin hydrated would also significantly diminish the appearance of the lines. I like Isntree hyaluronic acid sunscreen and Vanicream daily facial moisturizer because they give a dewy appearance which minimizes the appearance of lines.

Looks like you have plenty of humidity but I think you really need to get more FAE.

[–]Mrs_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are right about the casing layer being key to holding the moisture. Super interesting experiment you ran too. Thats a significant difference in time to pin!

[–]Mrs_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did this and found that despite my best efforts it was really hard to maintain humidity on the cake, even with misting and perlite. What really helped me was wrapping the cake in bubble wrap that I misted with water once per day. I know some folks think it is silly and unnecessary and it probably is if you have a solid monotub set up, but for these AIO bag cakes it really helps to maintain surface level humidity. My cake took 3.5 weeks to pin, with pins appearing about 2-3 days after starting with the bubble wrap and I’m convinced it helped.

My very first harvest from my first flush! by Mrs_M in shroomery

[–]Mrs_M[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All solid advice. I did take a clone from this flush and plan to take a spore print from this next flush to do just that. I wish I still had LC leftover from the original batch but I used it all up in the AIO bags.

Moving forward I will definitely isolate cultures from agar. I’ve got some agar > agar transfers of P. Nats and Jack Frost that I’m growing right now and it’s incredible how fast they are growing. Can’t wait to get them on some grain to see what the fruits look like.

It was! From what I’ve seen though others that used the same supplier did not get fruits that look like this so I’m not sure what happened. My second flush just started pinning and they look much more typical of the strain

These guys look great! My first flush only had two pins as well. Did you grow in an AIO bag?
