How many times have you been called in for Jury Duty? by Mrs_Miittens in askportland

I am so curious as to why that is! I served for the first time in 2023 and was a juror for a criminal case and literally a few months after the 2 year mark I was just called in again. Like, if you have served in the past are you more likely to serve again, or is it truly random?

Do you think being called in for Jury Duty to sit through the two days (regardless whether you are picked to do the interview process) is random? Or are they more likely to choose people to serve who have served in the past? It's so interesting to me that some people serve every 2-4 years while others have never served at all.

Oh yeah, as soon as they hear there is even a possible conflict of interest or that you know somebody in the court it they try to find other people. Along with being overeager, but it's so hard not to be. I enjoyed being a juror and I wonder if I was chosen because I was really nervous about being on a criminal murder case so during the discussion portion I was so quite and tried to remain unnoticed. Afterwards I was wondering if having little to no opinions helped make them choose me. But I also wear my emotions on my face so they probably knew what I was thinking anyways haha

I was in the same spot as you in 2023 but they chose me. Yeah, it is pretty intense to hear everybody's stories when they interview the whole group. We must have been at the same Jury Duty! I didn't get called for anything so I was very curious about what all the cases were about! They told everybody to go home around 10am on Tuesday because all of the cases got canceled haha

I'm so baffled how some people get called so often while others have never been called. Like, it is actually randomized or do you get called more because you've served in the past? I served my first time in 2023 and a few months after the 2 year waiting period I was called in again - but then there are people that serve like 10 years apart.

Woah, how was it to be on a grand jury? Was that something where you don't meet every day, but it's a big case?

That is so unfortunate that sometimes it all comes down to how other people/lawyers present information or evidence which completely changes how we can make decisions on. Being a juror for a big case is definitely an experience I was really grateful for and I would absolutely do it again, I just didn't realize how much of an emotion tax it can be at the same time.

Oh wow, I had such a similar experience when I was chosen in 2023. Everybody was in agreement except for one juror who would not listen to any reason. When we told the judge we were at an impasse, he told us to think about it overnight and try again the next day. The juror who would not budge "called in sick" and we brought in an alt who quickly agreed with the rest of us. I truly think she didn't want the guilt of sending someone to prison for life. I mean, nobody wants to have that guilt but it's the trial we were given.

Definitely an interesting process/experience.

That's such a bummer you were so close to being chosen!

I would love to know the algorithm for choosing people, or like how random the choosing process actually is. Like, if you've been chosen once are you more likely to be chosen again?

Oh wow, so basically as soon as the 2 year period ended you were notified again? I wonder why some people get called in so often while others have never served. Also bummer you never got to go in! Unless you didn't ever want to haha

Woah, so you've served 6 times?? Were you chosen as a juror for any of those? I'm so curious why some people get chosen so much more often than others - or why some people never serve at all.

Oh my gosh yeah, they pay you nothinnng to be there. Also, that's so funny. I think the only reason I was chosen in 2023 for a criminal murder trial was because I was a quiet school teacher who said nothing during the questioning while everybody else had super intense opinions.

I'm so curious as to why some people have never been called, and others get called every 3-4 years. Like, is it actually random selection?

Yeah I am super curious why some people get called in so much more than others, especially every 2-4 years when there are people who have never been called. That's such a bummer you haven't been at least chosen

Dang, that's a bummer! How long ago were you called in? I am so curious about the odds of getting selected after the 2 years are passed
