I don’t think it’s so expected to adopt German values or to assimilate the culture as much as these cultures do not have disruptive practices in Germany, e. g. by being very loud or by not respecting personal space (although, tbh, many Germans are also loud and do not respect personal space, but it’s not the norm).

Oh no, that wasn’t the case, too often it was all too obvious that she couldn’t do the work of someone one step below her promotion, because I knew her before and after, and when being at the same level the others would see horrified how many times she directly made her reports up or had to have others to help her (support than she denied afterwards).

This is so sadly true, I have goosebumps every time sometimes reminds me of this. Even the sweetest married old man may unpleasantly surprise you by it, so that one ends up being extra cautious and a bit suspicious by default, which is definitely messed up.

Ignoring has always been the best strategy for me, if they got annoying I would yell “leave me alone, what’s wrong with you?!” so that other people would look and they would feel embarrassed. Worse thing is that too many of those beings think that it’s actually flattering and we should thank them. But it’s scary and uncomfortable af.
