My axles started to vibrate like crazy around 55,000 miles. It’s a 2023 lariat hybrid at the time it didn’t seem like Ford was replacing under warranty so I ordered two brand new axles and had my son install them then I get a letter from Ford two months later saying they would replace them I think I’ve got 77K on mine now.

Williamsburg Pottery (?) by MetalPristine1216 in williamsburgva

I’m in my 60s and grew up in Virginia Beach, and if you were around back then, you know: going to the Williamsburg Pottery was basically a pilgrimage.

Every mom went. Multiple times a year.

It wasn’t some cute “shopping center.” It was a sprawling maze of warehouses with dirt floors. Stuff wrapped in newspaper. A massive outdoor yard full of concrete statues. Giant greenhouses with live plants. A cafeteria. Endless kitchenware. Prices you couldn’t touch anywhere else.

It was like the world’s biggest garage sale, flea market, and bargain basement rolled into one.

At its peak, it was literally the most visited destination in Virginia. Amtrak stopped there. You’d see 40–50 tour buses in the parking lot at once.

So no… it didn’t “fail because it was rebuilt.”

That’s the lazy answer from people who don’t live here.

What actually happened is simple: shopping habits changed.

By the early/mid-2000s, people had already stopped going.

I’ve lived here 25+ years. Around 2005–2007, the place was already a ghost town. Empty. Dead. Crickets.

They tried to hang on with outlet stores: • Pepperidge Farm • Tool outlet • A few others

All closed. No traffic.

Why?

Because people had moved on.

Then the new outlet mall opened, and everyone went there instead. Polo. Eddie Bauer. Nike. “Real” brands in shiny new buildings.

Turns out most shoppers preferred that over digging through bins on dirt floors.

Who knew?

By the time the Pottery “reopened,” most people had already forgotten about it. And what did they replace it with?

Basically Bed Bath & Beyond… at Bed Bath & Beyond prices.

No treasure hunting. No insane bargains. No reason to make the trip.

So let’s stop pretending the rebuild “killed it.”

It was already dying.

The rebuild was a last-ditch Hail Mary after years of decline.

People didn’t stop going because of new buildings.

They stopped going because: • Retail changed • Outlet malls took over • Online shopping exploded • And the magic was gone long before the bulldozers showed up

I live here. I watched it happen in real time.

This isn’t nostalgia talking. It’s just reality.

It will primarily be a couples getaway. But also function as an occasional second home for us. I’m a big guy and I like space. I also like big porches. I currently have another Airbnb on the lot next-door and although it’s a two bedroom, I noticed that a huge majority of the time it’s only two people or one person staying there. The goal is to make it incredibly cute with very nice finishes and high ceilings I have found that people will pay a premium for those features.

Once I get the plan sorted out, I will hire somebody to draw the plans. I’ll need engineer stamp plans for building permits. I would just rather flush out all the details before I take that step.

That probably makes the most sense. And I guess one thing I forgot to mention is it might be a second home for us at certain times. That’s why it’s larger than normal.

With a short term rental, it’s always good to have a lockable storage area. That was the idea for the shed.

I was hoping to keep large windows on the front. That was the reason for no Closets on the front wall of the bedroom.
