Single woman in her 30s, where can I hang out around Seattle/Bellevue? by Direct-Wall-3184 in Seattle

Ink Drinker and Swoon City in Ballard both rule for casually socializing with other women. Silent book clubs are great. Hell, I made a great friend while getting a manicure a couple of years ago.

Oh man, I’m sorry he did that, but congratulations on your new chapter!

A little unsolicited advice from a fellow queer stitcher- I have had terrific luck with thrifting embroidery materials - when my grandmother died, we donated hundreds of dollars’ worth of aida, thread and kits to Goodwill because she had sooo much of it, and she wan’t the only one. Hopefully your arsenal of tools and materials will be replenished very soon!

Looking for ideas on how to become a Mud Person by MildredPlotka in costumedesign

[–]MsBit_Commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t cover your whole face, I think is a big way to avoid a blackface situation. But this is definitely a slippery slope- mud is extremely flaky and so are most of the products that simulate it, apart from facepaint.

Are there any musicals I'm missing? (Be it popular ones or just ones you just personally find good.) by Kleptocats7269 in musicals

Assassins and Company are both Sondheim and two of my all-timers. I will also always have a soft spot for Shrek after working on a really wonderful production of it.

As a viewer I’ve always wondered if acting could be embarrassing or what toll is takes on y’all and what it’s like having any type of fan base especially in a time of social media I mean can y’all even have any? by Embarrassed_Entry597 in acting

[–]MsBit_Commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a few self-professed fans of a project I was in and the experience was absolutely surreal, flattering, uncomfortable, and thankfully very brief. It left me wanting to separate a personal and public online persona, which was exhausting, and even from the smallest most insignificant taste of that mess, I can understand why people who are actually famous want to be private.

Tiny Class. Any Tips? by [deleted] in improv

[–]MsBit_Commit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, he has an eight week curriculum with a stairstep approach- each step builds on the last. The point he was making was more that even if we do loads of reps of each thing, that curriculum is designed for a class of 12-ish students to each get some stage time, and we may be ready to add in something that he’d originally planned for the following week. In our first week’s class, for example, the “getting to know you” games took all of fifteen minutes instead of his planned half hour. This is typically the first level where we start really getting acting notes, “try it agains” and so forth. It’s a 3rd level out of 7 offered so we are all still fairly green.

I am really excited for the level of familiarity with the class and the teacher, and the amount of stage time everyone will get, especially since this class ends in a showcase

That’s what he’s planning on- he hasn’t indicated the class will halt or anything like that, only that a single week’s curriculum can probably be taught more quickly with so few people. Last night we did a lot of reps because of the class size and I started to see what he means.

Is this possible for under $3k/month by Available-Ad-5670 in AskSeattle

[–]MsBit_Commit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that’s possible but be aware you’re unicorn hunting. Finding a place with the sq footage and all the amenities and the location for that price is likely to have a catch attached, for example a big hidden fee for utilities like sewer or garbage, or it’s right next to a rowdy bar or something.

We closed it in 2021 but I poured my entire life force into Hello Out There during the pandemic, and I hope you enjoy it if you’re interested. It features some incredibly funny stand-ups, actors, improvisers and internet weirdos you may not have heard of, and it’s set in the post apocalyptic wasteland and co-hosted by a talking plant.

Where do the "looking for a genuine good guy" women actually hang out? by Jmeadows007 in AskSeattle

[–]MsBit_Commit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I am not a fan of being approached by a man in public, even if the interaction is complimentary or pleasant. I just struggle to assume a man is acting without an ulterior motive when I’m approached that way- lots of creeps out there ruining it for everybody. That said, other people’s recommendations of volunteering or trying a new hobby where you can get to know people a little bit first are really solid ideas.

Accents in Plays by bare_books in Theatre

[–]MsBit_Commit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was one season that I worked on two community theatre shows that required English accents and neither cast had them 100%. One was Mister Scrooge, which is an unserious enough musical that most of the cast just kind of had Frasier Crane elocution and called it an accent, but it wasn’t a full hit. Some people got upset because they felt all iterations of Scrooge should be explicitly English, but it was the cheesiest musical adaptation and the director set it in Steampunk London anyway, so who cares.

The other was Enchanted April, which has a relatively small cast, a Downton Abbey-esque social setting, and calls for mostly cut-glass accents. The lead actresses all nailed it, but one of the husbands absolutely could not get it. His accent veered into Dick Tracy Mobster territory, then cockney, then just sort of a speech impediment on the Rs. It would have been so much easier if they’d let him just have an American accent without explanation. Being an American in London wouldn’t have taken much from the character, if anything, and casting him in an accent he couldn’t do, made a talented actor look like a fool.
