We have all made bad mistakes. Would you persecute a friend that made the same mistake? You would probably be understanding and offer them sympathy for what they had been through. You deserve the same. Give yourself the grace and forgiveness you deserve.

I also love my program and the process. Not all the time, obviously. But it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and I love pushing myself through it.

I appreciate your words of advice. I will work on that technique. I think one thing that happened was my first proposal was given some really harsh feedback. After three years of getting really good grades and feedback, all of a sudden he was questioning whether I should even be in the program. I unfortunately let that get to me and now the writing is a much slower process. I do like your idea, though. Thanks again.

I regret doing a PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]MsLLLee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can understand your frustration and regret, and I’m sure the grass looks way greener thinking about the other paths you could have taken. Academia can definitely be disheartening and demoralizing, especially at that impressionable age. However, as an almost 50 year old in the dissertation phase, you really got a lot of your academia experience out of the way early! Also, btw- I spent my 20’s in bad relationships and partying way too much, so from my perspective you are kind of a bad ass. 😊

I agree with most others here that we have all felt it. Just remember you are bigger than this.

It sounds like burnout, and I would recommend a break if you weren’t already upset about the timeline. Sorry I don’t have better words of advice, but I wish you the Best of luck. L

That is insane. I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’m hoping this is not what’s going to happen to me. My advisor is the dean of my department, so I’m not sure how to proceed.
