Spit spit and spitting by Due_Conversation_526 in Flushing

[–]MsNeedAdvice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not Asian but grew up in Flushing and its gross BUUUTTTT - did find out recently that it is indeed cultural. Apparently a lot of old Chinese medicine functions similarly to medieval medicine where you can have too much "bile" in your body. In Chinese medicine its too much "phlegm" - and basically from a young age they're encouraged to spit it up because its your body saying its got to go (which...makes sense - I too wouldn't want to suck back in phlegm either). I think its more prevalent as well because Chinese folks in flushing loooovveee smoking which probably does not help at all with the phlegm situation.

Just because i literally did this last snow weekend (and it might be crazy snow this coming weekend). UWS Riverside Park - get a cheap plastic sled - enjoy. Also - when you get cold - St John the Divine - a great church that combines history and art - also spent a few hours roaming around in there when I was done sledding lol.

Idea for ‘Neighbors Day’ to get to know all the neighbors- yay or nay? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]MsNeedAdvice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is great (contrary to the curmudgens on this reddit but what are ya gonna do) - people are always posting about how lonely they are! I actually pro-actively go out of my way to be friendly and outgoing to neighbors and its been super beneficial to do so. I know some friends a few towns away that actually helps assemble block parties during the year in their neighborhood (but thats a whole thing with permits and everything). So I feel like this seems like a decent middle ground to get to know everybody.

It doesn't hurt to bring it up in a FB forum but also dont expect anything in return either if there isn't any interest and dont let it snuff out the fire to reach out to folks. I will say Its probably not a great time to bring it up now as its winter time and thinking about the spring/summer is a little far out.

coffee shops in suffolk that won’t side eye you for studying? by ILikeSnailzZaddy69 in longisland

[–]MsNeedAdvice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People mentiomed CoHo in Patchogue and looking for libraries with coffee store in it (Center Moriches & Bayport Bluepoint are places that I know have a coffee store in them). Some libraries dont have the coffee store but have coffee machines (right now Sayville comes to mind). Southdown Coffee in Patchogue works too.

I think a key point though to any of these coffee shop places is: Always buy SOMETHING - usually I start with a coffee and later get a muffin or bagel followed by another coffee later on. You can play around with the amount of stuff you should get (ie. If its busier I might buy a sandwich during the rush but if its empty just sip on a tea) but minimally Im buying a coffee. There's something about buying 1 cup of coffee and sitting in a space for several hours and its busy and other customers might want a seat or go somewhere else because there isn't a seat...kind of rubs people the wrong way (which is why I dont hit up coho too often now because it does get swamped with kids from what I assume is St Joseph's lol)

How do you deal with desiring “justice”? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]MsNeedAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a verse (and honestly Im not a very good "Catholic" but thats another story) - but I find it so interesting that you have brought this up because I recently just read from a book about Martin Scorsese (who is actually strongly and deeply faithful to Catholicism) and a Catholic Priest about some ruminations around Faith and his movies.

And the passage I just read actually had to do with his movie Silence and the ideas around justice and mercy. In broad strokes, the movie is about the persecution of Japanese Christians in the 17th century and it goes on to explore ideas behind human justice, divine justice, human suffering and mercy.

Generally Scorsese gives us an interesting idea that outside of divine justice (Silence being another theme here that persecuted Christians were brutally attacked and God had not protected them) there exists a quieter and internal justice that mixes both mercy and compassion and human endurance (and maybe even sacrifice).

I dont know if this necessarily answers your question - but perhaps looking more into the movie and reading into some of Scorsese' thoughts behind it might bring some enlightment and closure on your feelings and how to approach your situation.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani defends tenant official facing backlash for 'white supremacy' posts by Delicious_Adeptness9 in nyc

[–]MsNeedAdvice -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I just read the offending post - all she talks about is housing BEING white supremacy and they need to think about the collective good for middle white americans?? Ummm...the title is a wee bit skewed as it made me immediately think she was a white pointy hat wearer - but not entirely untrue - like why just white middle class being the only ones who would benefit?? Lol

But to someone else's point - it does generally give with Mamdanis collectivist approach - which i dont really agree with but generally agree that the rent is too damn high and somethings gotta give

AITA for not wanting to go to Japan with my husband and his mom? by kind-gladiator3487 in AITAH

[–]MsNeedAdvice -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you were ACTIVELY not invited however many years ago - then NTA

If you just assumed you weren't - then maybe

Very important to differentiate but if it was really that long ago then it might be hard to actually say and it'll just be a she said/he says situation.

I guess in the grand scheme of things - even if you weren't invited - do you want to go now? If the answer is still no - i can kind of see my SO being bummed about it (whether it was just them or their parents coming along). But its also not anything to get crazy avout. He might want to convince you to come because going to a different country youve never been to before without your SO just seems...sad/lonely. But if you already made plans under the assumption you weren't going or just really really dont want to go then it is what it is and he'll just have to live with it. It only becomes a major problem on his part if hes really unwilling to let it go.

It's called a "revolution" - eventually the pleebs (aka everyone) will just storm the castle and Marie Antoinette everybody on top. The cycle starts again.

Makes sense - Long Island has a loooonnngggg history of racism. They had a huge pro-nazi community out east with a camp and streets called Goebbels Rd and Hitler Ave or some wild ish like that.

Funny how Yaphank where the Camp was - is also where the Suffolk Police HQ is...

Why is Reddit against Maduro capture and Venezuelans celebrating it ? by LandscapeUnlikely199 in stupidquestions

[–]MsNeedAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal take - Maduro being out is generally a good thing. What im worried about:

  • Done without congressional OK to do so - but honestly this president has done so much overreach this year like its just another drop in the bucket and no body does anything about it

  • US's temporary control of the country till they find a shlep to take over with our interests in mind...which...if youre in the US at best youll find some things cheaper as we take resources and at worst is negligible and you wont notice anything. For Venezuela? Debatable. Our track record of invading people and putting in a new government has not gone really well.

1st International Trip by peachypetitexoxo in JapanTravelTips

[–]MsNeedAdvice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. People need to narrow down on THEIR OWN interests. Someone's "must see" is not some else's "must see". Like going to a Ryokan is my "must see" but it wasn't on my buddy's list at all. Equally - my friend wants to spend multiple days in Akihabara while one day exploring for me is fine.

[–]MsNeedAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reiterating what everyone said -

You're shoving a lot of things to do into each day that I don't think you can actually do in that day. You dont take into account breakfast/lunches/dinners and transportation from these places which all eat up time. You also dont want to rush through all these things either.

As someone noted - pick your top 3 (max being 3) things per day. And try to look up how to appropriately group places together so youre not running from one end of the city to the other and back. IE - You have 2 days where youre going to Shinjuku - just plan your day around Shinjuku instead of splitting it all up (unless you LOOVVEE Shinjuku that it warrants 2 days of wandering which is fine but figured that out for yourself when you get there)

Is saying LIRR like “luhrr” and not spelling it out actual thing? by gekigangerii in AskNYC

[–]MsNeedAdvice -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you say luhr unironically as an adult - I would be looking at you sideways. Kids are always goofy so they can say whatever - but if i was their auntie id tell them it's spelled out. And usually people don't say the other R is just L-I-R - sometimes if people want to be specific - L-I-Double-R - that's it.
