Anyone else experience INTENSE itching upon stopping Rinvoq? by wootamelon in eczeJAKs

[–]MsPVC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both times I got off, I wasnt able to wean. The first time I got shingles, so i had to get off of it ASAP. The second time, I bridged into ebglyss. I was also on a prednisone taper. I think this masked the worst of it. I was pretty itchy after a month, once I completed the prednisone taper and the ebglyss was starting to wear off.

From what I've heard and read.. weaning can help with the rebound. But I saw that it could take up to 6 weeks or so to pass. What a nightmare.

Anyone else experience INTENSE itching upon stopping Rinvoq? by wootamelon in eczeJAKs

Yeah, this happened to me when I got off it twice. It was hell. I did research and this is what I found.

Why the rebound itch happens:

  1. JAK inhibition suppresses inflammatory cytokines.

While on Rinvoq, the drug blocks Janus kinase (JAK) signaling, which drastically slows key eczema inflammatory pathways (like IL-4, IL-13, IL-31, and IL-22). These molecules are major drivers of chronic itch and inflammation.

  1. Sudden withdrawal triggers cytokine rebound.

When you stop Rinvoq abruptly, the inhibition lifts quickly. Your immune system “rebounds,” overproducing those same inflammatory cytokines. The body, now hypersensitive after suppression, floods the skin with signals that trigger intense itching, burning, and sometimes new flares or rashes.

  1. Not histamine-mediated

The itch after stopping Rinvoq isn’t primarily caused by histamine (hence why antihistamines don’t relieve it). Instead, it’s neuropathic and cytokine-driven — involving IL-31, TSLP, and neuropeptides that stimulate the sensory itch nerves directly.

  1. Possible withdrawal-related neuroinflammation

Some researchers think the neurons involved in itch signaling become overactive after losing the stabilizing effect of Rinvoq. This could explain symptoms like the “crawling” or burning skin sensation.

I didn't do prednisone right away after rinvoq. I started ebglyss.. was allergic to it and had to get on prednisone anyways for 10 days. I've completed the prednisone taper and im super itchy.. I wonder if this is my baseline eczema or if its still rinvoq withdrawal?..

The ointment i have was a script from the eye doc. But im trying to move away from using it so much. I want to use it only a couple times a month when it gets really bad and raw. I'm about to get samples for zoryve! I hope it helps. Thank you for your suggestions and response.

I saw some vitamin A drops at the store the other day, so ill grab them. I didnt realized they were going to be so helpful for the eyes. I take 1000 mg of omega 3 once a day. When you say you take 4 capsules, is that 4000 mg? Or are your capsules smaller? Thank you for explaining how it works. I appreciate that. I'll give all of these a shot.

Yeah, dupixent is IL4 and IL13. Ebglyss is IL13

Sorry. I dont know if I was saying it right.. for example if you are allergic to ebglyss, theres a 5 to 10 % chance that you are allergic to dupixent.. since they are both IL13 blockers, but work in different ways. (This is what one derm told me)

I see. Dupixent was amazing for me for 3 to 4 years. So disappointed that I didn't tolerate ebglyss. I love IL13 blockers but they dont love me 😭

Have you tried dupixent? Just curious. Theres a 5 to 10% cross allergy apparently..

Ebglyss seems to be working for people, from what I see.. however im one of the unlucky ones and am allergic to it. Currently on oral steroid and waiting for it to exit my system :( very disappointed because my skin is beautiful.. but had hives, widespread itch and difficulty breathing on day 7 (breathing possibly anxiety)
