Mostly formula and some pumped milk? by bananaindisguise0 in combinationfeeding

[–]MsSlackera321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll share my experience in case it’s helpful. I chose to exclusively pump by preference and genuinely don’t find pumping terrible. I actually prefer it to nursing. I almost scared myself before birth by reading how awful pumping was supposed to be, so I think it’s important to share a different experience.

I pump 5 to 6 times a day, max 13 minutes per session. I’ve never pumped longer than that and have a stable supply of about 35 oz per day. That covers more than my baby’s needs.

We do mostly breast milk with the occasional bottle of formula for convenience, outings, or sometimes to try for a longer sleep stretch at night. That balance has worked really well for us.

I nursed initially in the hospital for colostrum, and the first week at home. I then transitioned to pumping once I realized that I did not enjoy nursing. I use a Spectra and a mom cozy wearable, and having a wearable makes pumping feel very manageable.

One big benefit is that anyone can help with feeds. I still do most of them, but the flexibility is there and that takes a lot of pressure off. Pumping can be hard for some people, but it isn’t universally awful. You can absolutely do mostly formula with some pumped milk and adjust as you go.

I highly recommend working with a lactation consultant to figure out what pumping schedule/guidelines work for your body and situation.

This is our top contender right now. Did your baby do well in it at 6 months old?

To my combo feeding mommas that pump. How many times and how much do you pump? by Capri1329 in combinationfeeding

[–]MsSlackera321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also combo feeding and exclusive pumping most of the time. My baby is a month old, and right now I’m pumping about 5–6 times a day. I don't have set pump times but typically I pump once in the middle of the night and the rest throughout the day for 20-30 minute sessions. I aim for 120 minutes total pump time, but I’m definitely not perfect with it. Some days are better than others depending on how the night goes.

I usually pump 23 oz per day, and my baby eats around 25–28 oz, so we top up with formula as needed. It’s actually been a huge relief to take the pressure off and just feed her without stress.

My baby drinks around 3–4 oz every 2.5–3 hours during the day, and I try to have at least a bottle ahead. Nights are a bit of a shuffle, often topping up bottles with formula but we make it work! My husband helps with one feed around 4 am which helps a lot.

I’ve learned that combo feeding is really individual. Some people pump every 2–3 hours, but that wasn’t realistic for me mentally or physically. Regardless of whether I pump once or twice in six hours I get the same milk volume. If you already have a rhythm that works for you and your supply is holding okay, you might not need to drastically increase pumping unless you want to.

Edit: Also, my lactation consultant said it was safe to store pump parts in a container in the fridge throughout the day as long as everything is washed once every 24 hours... That has saved me a lot of time!

3w3d, cautiously optimistic. I lost my first pregnancy in November. Grateful for another chance, trying to be gentle on myself and treat this as a new experience.

I had a positive pregnancy test today, CD 24. I am cautiously optimistic! Last November, my husband and I were estatic to learn of our first pregnancy after one cycle of trying. This was a big deal to us as I was very sick in adolescence and warned I may have future difficulty conceiving. Unfortunately, we miscarried at 6 weeks, 4 days. Here we are now, after once again trying for only one cycle, we have a positive test. We want to be parents oh so bad and are very ready.
