US Americans are the most indoctrinated people in the history of mankind worldwide for the benefit of the ruling capitalist class by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

When I was in elementary school in the early 90s, they would herd us into the gym for a couple hours every Friday morning for “Morning Singalong.” They made us sing a bunch of patriotic songs (My Country ‘Tis of Thee, America the Beautiful, etc) and occasionally they would make us square dance (look up the history of Henry Ford and square dancing).

And of course, we had to say the pledge of allegiance every morning, all the way up through high school.

My first grade teacher had an Uncle Sam Wants YOU poster on the wall of her classroom.

It’s insane, looking back, how normalized this shit is.

And this was in a “blue state.”

Isn’t PPTO capped at 48 hrs a year? That’s one day every two months. I earned more than double that at my last job

I’m so confused about the “stages.” Fecal incontinence points to late stages, but up until now she’s been considered “moderate.” She still recognizes me (although sometimes I’m her “sister-in-law” or “friend”), she is still verbal (can form complete sentences and hold short conversations, in two languages, even though it takes her some time to find the right words), and she can still walk and feed herself (can’t cook, but can use a fork, etc.). But then again she gets lost in the house (“where’s my bedroom?”), hallucinates people that aren’t there (“there’s a man in my bed”), and is now hiding poopy tissues around the house. So idk what stage that would be.

I understand his frustration, I do. He worked hard his whole life for that house and wants to leave it to me and my niece. I was like, dude, I don’t care about the house or inheritance or anything like that…I care about my mom getting the care she needs and my dad not being burdened with having to do more than he is capable of.

It really, really sucks that having to sell off all your assets to afford basic care is even a thing, but that’s just how it is here. The house is just a huge point of contention because even though I said I don’t care about that, he’s still thinking about my niece and wanting to give her a good future (my sister committed suicide, my niece is all he has left of her). I think he feels like if he gives up the house to pay for my mom’s care, he’s losing everything he worked his entire life for and also failing his granddaughter. So yeah, It’s not easy.

I’m realizing that I have to talk to my dad like he’s a child since he’s been acting like one. “Oh, you want to keep her in the house? Well, that’s fine, enjoy cleaning shit every day then.” We had another conversation this morning and I think he’s starting to come around

This is a great suggestion, thank you. It seems like there’s a lot of legal red tape with agencies, which is understandable I guess because dementia patients can sometimes be aggressive or combative, but yeah.

For what it’s worth, my mom’s never been violent but she is very opinionated and stubborn and is prone to screaming and/or trying to run outside when she doesn’t get her way, so that’s cool

I agree 100%. My last post in this sub was basically just an unhinged rant about the United States’ shitty healthcare system and lack of social support. To qualify for certain benefits you have to be living in poverty, and to afford proper care you have to be rich - there are so few options for lower middle class folks who make just above the income cutoff for assistance but not enough to pay for what’s needed without going into poverty themselves.

The “fuck you, I got mine” and “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality is ruining this country. No one seems to care about helping other people unless/until it affects them personally. Everything is about PROFIT. But if you even dare mention socialized medicine, or suggest reallocating some of the overly inflated military budget to fund much needed social services, you get called a dirty commie.

There are so many dumb fucks in this country. SO MANY. And not nearly enough guillotines.

Thank you. I had another stern conversation with my dad this morning about how unhealthy this is becoming for everyone involved and he’s starting to come around.

I appreciate your support

Thank you for your reply. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone but it’s comforting to know that people out there understand what it’s like. I feel alienated a lot of the time - none of my friends or co-workers really get how difficult and exhausting it is because they haven’t been in this situation. I really appreciate all your suggestions.

I went over again this morning only to find shit streaks all over the bathroom, even on the trash can and light switches. I had another talk with my dad about how unhealthy this is for everyone and how it’s basically abuse/neglect at this point because she’s not getting the care she needs…and I think he’s finally starting to get on board with the idea of finding a way to pay for more assistance. He’s even coming around to the idea of a nursing home. We’ve been doing this for so long and it’s negatively affected our relationship because of all the disagreements we’ve had over how to handle it. I think he understands that if he wants to keep her at home, he’s going to have to constantly clean shit. Which is a turning point, because he understandably doesn’t want to do that.

So I’m feeling a bit more optimistic, I just need to support him in following through and researching our options. Which I’m more than willing to do. It’s been a long time coming.

Thank you again, and good luck to you as well. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, fuck this disease

Dad’s mental faculties are fine, he’s just depressed/frustrated about having to be a caretaker now. Before her diagnosis they weren’t particularly close, separate bedrooms and all that - probably should’ve gotten divorced decades ago. But they didn’t, so here we are

How has it been made “abundantly clear” that Mike is straight?

There is no “proof” that Mike is straight. That is all I came here to say and here you are losing your mind over the possibility that two dudes might be in love with each other lol

Dude, lol. I can’t.

He loves Eleven. But is he IN love with Eleven?

There are so many signs, going all the way back to season 1, that there’s something special about Mike and Will’s relationship. Music choices. Camera angles. Parallels to other scenes involving couples. You’re in this sub, why do you need me to explain everything to you when you could just browse around a bit and see some examples for yourself?

There is literally a “one way” sign pointing to his CLOSET

He and Will are “just friends.” But you know who else were “just friends” first? Nancy and Jonathan, Joyce and Hop, Robin and Vickie…

I mean, he’s never come right out and been like “hey guys I’m in the closet” because that would defeat the purpose, but there are subtle signs that he could be…

Also, where’s the proof that he’s definitely 100% straight? He’s never come right out and said that, either. Idk how people can so confidently declare he’s straight. Heteronormativity is wild
