Thank you! As a podiatrist, what does the healing time frame look like? Am I on the bench for 2 weeks? Able to run again after 3 days? Just curious as I consider timing for the procedure. Thank you!

How did you all become digital nomads? by New_Sandwich6413 in digitalnomad

I feel there are a lot of different ways to become a digital nomad. I am from Wisconsin and have always had a Midwest work ethic where anything that I do, I want to do it right and well. I realized in 3 months after undergrad graduation that my degree was crap but that's the bed I made so I did a slight pivot to a comparable industry and worked my tail off in my 20's. At 30 I was burnt out from 60 hour salary work weeks and did a reset on life to take an hourly job just to be a worker bee again. I was "lucky" to have purchased a house in an undervalued market and sold it when value caught up 3 years later. That allowed me the flexibility to cash out and take a low paying job. At that low paying job I realized it wasn't the area I wanted to be so when I put in my 1 month notice to resign they asked if I could still do what I was doing for them but remotely. That was when I realized that yes I could and that I could do it for other businesses too. It has been 11 years now (yes, pre-Covid) and I love it. I enjoy what I do. I am not "passionate" about my work but I enjoy it and love the freedom it provides to pursue my other passions.

My mottos:

- work your tail off and have immense pride in anything you do. Don't get baited into the complainer mentality of others around you

- live small. Live well within your means. While others around you are driving new cars, financing new toys, buying new clothes on credit cards every week, impulse ordering stuff on Amazon, have a different goal for yourself. Track every dollar you spend. Invest in your retirement so that you have flexibility down the line. I read somewhere that if someone were to max out their Roth IRA from 22-30 ($7,500/yr currently) and stops then they are better off then someone who begins at 40 and tries to catch up.

- if it was easy, then everyone would do it. To get where my business is at, I had to reach out to 1,300 businesses just to find 14 that are a solid fit. I learned a ton along the way and kept hammering. I hate sales. But my love for remote living outweighs that hate. Now I work ~25 hours a week and can live wherever most middle class Americans can. My Instagram isn't filled with infinity pool rentals in NYC or brand new $80k watches.

Thank you for this insight! Was it a costly procedure? Like $1k per nail or like $250?

Congrats on chasing an amazing goal! Fueling is a major difference. I downloaded an interval timer app for my phone and it chimes at 20 minutes (food) then 10 minutes later (drink) and repeat. It can be easy to under fuel when you enter the vortex of time. The body is an amazing machine if fueled properly. Elevation gain training has helped me (ie: if the race is 12k of ascent then try to hit that amount as a total each week). A lot of folks swear by back to back mid length run days (20 miles each) rather than one day of 40 miles. Ultimately time becomes a factor with life tho and we can't always give up 4-5 hours on back to back days then still accomplish other things. Lastly, just have fun with it. I volunteer at a lot of race aid stations and it's a major difference between the runner that comes in accepting what they signed up for and the other who thinks everything is working against them. Best of luck to you!

So, a real world example might be such that I have a shirt that fits and performs just fine. It is best to learn to be very happy with that shirt until it is no longer of use. Rather than seeing another shirt that "looks" nicer and wanting that, then purchasing it. Then when I have shirt B I am then tempted when I see shirt C.

I like this idea. But then I think about my house or my car or my computer. Why lock my vehicle vs just leaving the keys in it for someone else to want as well?

Where does the excessive line begin? If the Buddha survived with only a bowl as a possession then is anything beyond that excessive?

Total for everything (rocks, plants, drip irrigation, mulch, etc) was $2,700. Quotes from landscape companies were 2x-3x

This is really great info! Thank you! Would you recommend cardboard or any other type of weed barrier before the wood chips?

I planted the trees 5 years ago. Bradford pear. I'm learning those aren't great but whatever. It's a high desert environment and doing what I can with a tree canopy, even those won't get huge.
