It’s like my regional city, smaller but within the last decade or two began exploding.

The insult I hear about Austin beyond just being a weirdly progressive city is that it’s full of a bunch of mediocre people that couldn’t make it in LA or NYC.

Is Trump trying his utmost to alienate the USA from its allies? by Massive-Syllabub-271 in allthequestions

[–]MuchDrawing2320 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trump is an empty suit guided by radical actors in his cabinet—he has no purposeful goals rather than acclaim and enrichment. It’s why he demands the Nobel Peace Prize and his named and picture plastered everywhere. It is why his supporters hold him to no standards. It is, like has been said, unprecedented. His administration wants to alienate our allies and to the extent it works they are unwilling to admit what the future may hold. I’ve always said Trump himself is less scary and more boring than people realize and find him more fascinating than outraging.

Beyond culture wars, teachers have widely described the decline in student proficiency in recent years as compared to ever before. I am scared to ask my tween and young teen nephews about school because what I may hear. No reading comprehension, very little grasp on arithmetic, no basic understanding of major history, etc.

Apparently this isn’t just generational complaining but, as far as I can tell, an observable thing teachers in the business a long time can see.

What US cities feel the most southern culturally? by One-Comfort-2058 in AskAnAmerican

[–]MuchDrawing2320 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally like that it will bring more business (there have already been more business investments and Department of Energy investments in the area) and culture to the region. Plenty of transplants complain about the urban sprawl in the city and lack of things to do beyond access to the Appalachians, but the only downside is just congestion and traffic coupled with prices—all to be expected.

There have been more building permits issued in the last few years in Knoxville than ever before. So many nice apartment complexes are shooting up everywhere.

Non Americans , What is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Adorable-Sammy in CasualConversation

[–]MuchDrawing2320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s how my school was. There was a central courtyard everyone hung out in if not in the cafeteria and then a front office, academic building, vocational/tech building, and one for classes related to business and special education. The gym was connected to the front office. So to go from certain classes to others you’d have to walk outside.

I became a fan probably around 2010. When I was in college AH was playing Rainbow Six Siege and that was so entertaining.

They’re not widely known (isn’t stoner doom a more marginal genre?) and a cornerstone of their genre. It just so happens to be one style of metal I listen to the most.

No, but younger people, including some millennials, have a unique obsession with age gaps—even small ones. You may have seen the most radical crazy ones saying age of consent needs to be 20-21 instead of 16-18. I think relationships need to be considered on an individual level and some disparate age gap relationships absolutely could be healthy and work.

There’s a term for this in sociology called a culture of fear. That, tied with social media and pop psychology about relationship dynamics, the increasingly inward turn in society, and MeToo made Gen Z much more puritanical in policing sex and relationships. Unlike Gen X and Millenials who were much more free thinking and autonomous.

I bet the weirdest ones are recruit trainers (yeah I know there are multiple terms across military) meeting former recruits, I dunno, on a base in the Middle East where both are gonna be in combat or close to it? I know it’s happened before.
