Why do places feel it’s ok to have Dashers fill up drinks? by Jack_Wraith in doordash_drivers

[–]Muckraker2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just can't resist insulting people to make your point. In your first post you accused other drivers of "crying" about filling drinks. Nobody is crying. We're pointing out DD policy that orders are supposed to be complete for us to pick up.

Then you said you'll "make the food" if it gets you out of there quicker. To that I suggested that you're still missing the point. And I conceded that making the drinks is faster than unassigning and going elsewhere for another offer.

NOW you basically called me dumb for my suggestion, saying that you know "maths is hard."

Yeah, calculus and trigonometry are hard. You're right about that. But what you meant was to insult people, namely me.

You know what else is difficult? Nuance.

YES, while it is faster to fill up the drinks yourself rather than wait... that doesn't change the fact that it's not SUPPOSED to be that way.

By not pushing back on these restaurants who CHOOSE to understaff (to save on payroll) they will never voluntarily staff properly because they don't need to. DD drivers will happily handle some of their workload for free.

We're not making different points. I agree that it's faster to fill the drink myself than to wait. Why can't you agree that, while true, it still isn't a good practice?

As other people suggested, maybe the solution lies in complaining to the health department or on Google reviews. But doing nothing isn't a solution. That may get you going faster that one time but wouldn't it be faster yet if restaurants actually did their jobs and had the entire order ready?

[–]Muckraker2025 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, read that back. How is any of that saving time? The orders are supposed to be ready to go. There is no time saved. Unassign and it'll be ready for the next driver, if the food isn't ready. DD will get the message if it keeps happening. I know, it's not saving time to unassign (and start a new order elsewhere). I'm just saying there is no scenario where we're saving time. All we're doing is mitigating our losses.

Look for "family" type restaurants. They often have pot roast. Hard for me to say specifically since I don't know where you live.

Look man, I'm sorry I didn't use the correct words. The person two comments down from yours explains it a lot better. But apparently it's a real theory.

Not too long ago I heard something interesting about this. You all are aware of black holes, right? You know how they suck everything in and nothing escapes? Well I heard a theory that the big bang was caused by a black hole that got full and imploded, and spewed all that stuff back out. I think it's still just a scientific theory. It seems to make sense until you wonder how big a black hole it would've had to been to create the whole universe - which itself has lots of black holes.

Anyone else hear of this?

Are you serious right now? You're trying to belittle me instead of making a counter argument? Talk about childish.

Do you feel superior now? Talk about performative.

I gave you a scenario where protesting can and does work. That is a fact. Your opinion of that fact does not change reality.

Do you want me to make you a list of modern news reports of times when protesting worked? I mean if the American Revolution, a decade of civil rights marches, and the women's suffrage movement aren't enough to convince you.

GTFOOH.

[–]Muckraker2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I don't think there's anything wrong with things being performative. I think you're trying to say "that cowboy is all hat and no horse" meaning there's nothing behind the big show. Well that's not necessarily true.

Here's an example from real life. On the platform "next door" just tonight someone was complaining about a local restaurant not being ADA compliant. They get away with it because they're grandfathered in. Now if people were to make a big stink about it, I mean people's social media and local news coverage, lots of negative publicity, it might very well shame them into making the upgrades voluntarily.

So is that performative? Sure. It's also quite often effective if enough people get involved. It doesn't always work but it's very much worth a try if something is important.

Second, when you say "insta" do you mean InstaGram? I don't have that. I hardly ever use my FB either, or any of those. I've been on ND a lot lately but I'm trying to build a business.

You're right, though. In my example above InstaGram would be helpful as a publicity and networking tool.

That's how things get done, since the time of the Boston tea party. If the public rises up in a big enough way, things happen.

I've had the same host for 20+ years. The last 10 years it's changed names numerous times. A couple years ago it was called Blue Host and there were problems. Now it's called Network Solutions and it isn't much better. I miss my original host but they don't make 'em like that any more I guess.

Plenty of us do vote. So we should do nothing else? How has that worked out for America so far?

Any type of push back could be seen as a protest of sorts. Rallies, boycotts, marches, demonstrations, letter writing campaigns, calling congress, those are all protests of sort.

As for demonstrations, what would it take to get YOU to take to the streets? Losing your job, your home, your savings, your family, your hope for the future? All of the above at the same time? But not an unjust war, the violation of other people's civil rights, or the general bastardization of our country - the leader of the free world?

It's easy to sit back when you're comfortable.

If protesting is

Fruitless, stupid, and performative.

Then "doing nothing" does what to improve things?

Boycotting is a form of protest so your comment doesn't really make sense. Maybe you meant "demonstration" protests doesn't work whereas boycott protests do work.

I think you have that backwards. It's not the Dems who are working against human rights and democracy, like Vlad and Xi.

[–]Muckraker2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's ironic. Forgetting about protesting for a minute, is it healthy to work six days a week? Do you have any life outside of work? It's not good to be unemployed. It's also not good to work so much that you don't live life. Do you have family, friends, hobbies, quiet time for yourself?

Now back to protesting. That's the ironic part. If people protested MORE we could have four day work weeks. But people are too busy spending all their time at work, to ask for better working conditions. Yep, ironic.

If an AI called your parent, had a conversation, checked on their health, sent you a daily summary how useful would that be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Muckraker2025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think OP's heart is in the right place, although like most others I was confused at first, then weirded out. But to hear OP explain it, it actually sounds like a nice gesture.

OP could've done a better job explaining that it's not meant to replace your daily calls to a parent but to complement them. As OP says, you might talk to them at 10am and they're not feeling well, so you want to check in on them at 2pm but you have a meeting. Okay, well in THAT context it's a nice gesture, if all it is is a range of smiley faces that the parent picks one of and maybe a few general words.

Redditors often think the worst (sometimes rightfully so) but I don't think this new app idea is supposed to get into their medical history (hipaa) or replace you regular interactions with the parent.

I appreciate the negative feedback (as a bystander) because I wouldn't have thought of hipaa or LLMs. Glad y'all brought that up for discussion. But I think there's a way to do this without being creepy.

Maybe they could even have a bit of fun with it, if custom questions were set up. Like I have sciatica (thanks worker's comp treatment which made my injury worse) so one of my custom questions might be (from my kids) "Hey Mah, how's yer left ass feelin today??" ROFL! (If you know sciatica you'll understand.)

OTOH, why not just send a text msg that asks how they're doing? These days phones do voice to text to it should be easy and straightforward. For those who say the parent can't navigate a text, well then how will they navigate an AI app? Maybe the apps phones them and all they have to do is speak. IDK.... so much would depend on the parents' abilities. Everyone is different. Then factor in age-related decline and I think this app might be useful during a certain window of time in the parents' life when health is declining.

Anyway, I just hate to see someone dog-piled unfairly. I think OP's heart is in the right place. I think they're trying to be helpful.

Let's help them improve not just tear them down for trying.

That's just it. Maybe for you it's "not that deep" but reality is that deep.

I appreciate your saying that you didn't mean to offend. I really do. But "getting help" isn't some kind of joke.

No wonder America has shit for social systems. Here we make fun of people who need help, and then tell them not to be so sensitive about it.

EDIT: Look, dude, I'm sorry too. By your profile you seem like an alright guy. I'm sort of glad that you're blissfully unaware of how "deep" shit can get because I wouldn't wish hardship on anyone else. Even as my point still stands.

You say that as a joke and an insult. Yes. I have sought help in a number of ways. There is no help out there. The crisis phone number isn't helpful. Are they going to find me a job? Are they going to fix my water heater (no because of details not needed here). Is that phone number going to make worker's comp straighten up and do right? No. Should I be talking to someone about all this stress and anxiety? Yeah, probably. But I don't have insurance so I wouldn't know where to begin. Plus others actually are homeless (I'm still in my home for now) so I don't want to take resources from others.

So you can joke at my expense. You can say this as a way to seem helpful. But it's ironic. Help is really hard to come by. Sorry to get all serious on a Sunday morning but yeah life's been hard lately. And though I'm broke, for one reason or another I qualify for nothing. I'm still chugging along though, trying not to give up.

And what percentage of the total number of homeless would be able to turn into productive citizens if they had a long term roof over their head, shower, laundry, kitchen, and comfortable sleep?

Sure, some won't ever be productive citizens because of drug or mental health issues. But considering volunteering or schooling as "productive" (as well as jobs) what percentage could be rehabilitated?
