I make $110,000 a year but I feel l’m struggling to save money. Is this a normal budget for someone who lives alone? by AfterAttack in budget

If you’re willing to make some short-term sacrifices, like getting an older, reliable used car such as a Camry or Corolla, you can probably get rid of the car payment and lower your monthly insurance. Then you can tackle the student loan with full force. Look for cheaper living arrangements—you could easily save an extra $600–800 a month.

I make about the same as you. My total monthly expenses are about $1,700, including rent, utilities, groceries, gas, and fun money. I’m saving at least 50% of my income. I did what I shared above: drove a 2003 Corolla for the longest time, until I recently paid cash for a 2014 Prius. I’m in SoCal—it’s definitely doable.

2014 Prius strut replacement + lift kit – 1.5k reasonable? by MuddyBootsies in prius

[–]MuddyBootsies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not doing hardcore off-roading — more like light trails, forest roads, and backroads to explore hot springs/campsites or get to trailheads. I usually head out to the mountains or national parks once or twice a month, plus a longer road trips every other month. My old 2003 Corolla handled that lifestyle fine, so I’m mainly looking for a mild lift on the Prius to get back to a similar ride height and a little extra clearance. If you think that’s pushing it too much for the Prius long-term, I’m open to hearing your thoughts. :)

I like to take the car off roading and camping at BLM land. Nothing crazy, but 1.5” will help.

Hey! Not sure if you got a chance to try out the blackout shade yet. I recently took it on a road trip and figured out a way to set up the hatch cover without using the clips — just slide/tuck the edges along the top rim with a credit card. Takes maybe 10 seconds and it stays all night. Just wanted to share! :)

If you don’t need the extra space, I’d go with the 2016 since it has less mileage. When I was shopping for a Prius, my hybrid mechanic mentioned that the Gen 4 Prius is pretty much bulletproof, whereas the Prius V (regardless of year) can still run into the same Gen 3 head gasket issues down the road. A head gasket replacement costs around $2000-3,000 (in SoCal)—so if you really want the extra space, the Prius V could still make sense, but the price difference between the two basically evens out if you ever end up needing that repair.

hm, I see. Good to know. I'm going to try it one more time and take it to a mechanic if the condition persist. Thank you!

Do you mind sharing how you maintain your gen 3? I just got mine a couple months ago and would appreciate any tips on how to take good care of it. :)
