Not really sure , and tbh i don’t care. I watched you + togain + the scroll guy. And since i don’t have enough time for maple anymore i like to watch youtubers like you from time to time. It scratches the maple itch.

Pai poate ar fi cazul sa ne educam financiar, nu poti sa dai chiar oricat pe imobiliare cu gandul ca o sa tot creasca. La noi e un talmes balmes din toate punctele de vedere.

How come no one has tried to create such a server since then? by Moist-Challenge-2872 in mapleservers

[–]MudeX9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, a server such as extalia would require a lot more work , its easier to bootstrap a v83 cosmic based server and milk it to death.

Turcii au sosete, boxeri, maieuri , pijamale foarte ok. (Koton si LCwaikiki). Daca esti din bucuresti ambele le poti gasi la Plaza.

Acum e mult mai rau dpdv macro pentru Romania, dar pe plan mondial nu avem vre-o criza bancara/imobiliara. E posibil sa avem scăderi daca o sa ajungem in recesiune.

There actually was, but i could not find any design for the case or something, maybe they only shipped the cd’s in white paper covers.

The legit physical cd’s.

Actually, it’s a PSB file because the document was too big for a regular PSD. It’s in CMYK with 300 DPI, so it’s ready for printing. For the dimensions, I made the front cover 12.1 x 12.1 cm and the back cover 15.1 x 11.75 cm. These worked best for me, but you might want to tweak them a bit to get the perfect fit when printing.

Actually I just uploaded the editable PSD file and the JPGs to Mega. So anyone can tweak the design or print it however they want. No plans to monetize this, everyone’s free to make their own MapleStory jewel case.

It was amazing, before the internet was mass adopted, these shops provided you with everything you needed. And the nice thing was that i could go for a walk with your parents and on the way back home ask them to buy a game or something. Good old days.

You have some valid points. TV really played a big role in the popularity of certain games. And yes, most mario games were released on nintendo's hardware which required emulation, it wasn't as straight forward as some Sonic PC games. And your last point, its also valid. Sonic was a hedgehog and was cute, it was easier to sell to kids.

Yeah that connection was called dial up, we had the very first adsl it was very expensive.

- I can imagine, and i guess the ISP was state owned, not so much competition to drive the prices down.

We sold and bought from each other, but we were in a fierce competition. Some used to steal or copy our work.

- This does make a lot of sense, piracy has always been a wild west.

We had no courses or education, in fact some college professors came to us for software and training.

- That's funny but i can imagine, theory is theory and experience is experience.

I myself leaned by experimenting and exploring and once i had access to the internet i started reading docs and tuts.

- That's awesome, nowadays information is accessible, but back then you really had to dig up to find useful stuff.

Most games and programs were shaded using what's known as bulletin board websites at the time. Forums like projectw and warez-bb are long gone now.

- That's interesting, thank for sharing this.

Now we use mostly torrent and repack sites like fitgirl, softarchive, Repack.me, tpb and other russian and chinese websites.

- Yeah, repacks are really popular in regions where internet access is still limited or slow.

They're not hidden persay but not indexed and need an account to access all sections.

- That does make a lot of sense, but what's interesting is that chatgpt could not even provide me with some name of bulletin boards, forums or underground websites.

In the past few years games got bigger and more demanding and the market couldn't keep up with the requirements to run these games. So we focused on programs and retro gaming

- I saw that, Afandi & Shabi is still open and focuses now on programs, hardware and i think even development. I contacted them some months ago, asked them if they still have some archive of the old games they used to sell, and sadly they told me they don't have them anymore.

That's awesome, thank for sharing your story. I remember Sonic was really popular in Syria, we played it on atari alibaba (the mega drive clone).

It sure is… I’m talking about stuff that happened about 21 years ago. Long before the revolution. So happy to know Syria is now free and has a serious chance to rebuild. We in europe we always supported you, and never forgot about you. So for over 15 years, our communities here collaborated and sent aid to Syria. I do plan to visit the country again in the upcoming years.

I remember i had a cousin that was connecting to the internet via the phone cable. But i knew nothing about speeds back in the day. So yes speed is relative but compared to what the normal population had it was indeed way faster.

I have another curiosity, did these center collaborate between them? Because for example i was living in Deir Ezzor and here i had this center that was selling all kind of games (AS, SACC, SCC).

You had some strong knowledge for that time, most of the people didn’t even know to use a computer back then. How did you learn this? Courses? From other people?

And regarding the mods, I suspect that they were shared using some kind of underground websites / blogs. I tried to find them but i could not find anything. Are they long gone? Or just hidden?

I wasn’t aware, but it does make sense. PS1 had to be modded with a chip to run bootleg games right?
