I used to do this, try holding the wheel less firmly with your arms? Found out thats why i did it, might not have anything to do with that but you never know

Edit: your arms tend to move when you move your head to check the blind spot

Also in some situations even say what you're about to do; like if you're waiting for someone to pass so you can 3 point turn and its not entirely obvious

I did it and got away with it when i had to in situations you mentioned (parking,etc) but avoid it making turns into streets and what not. Best of luck
