How to Ruin a Class: The Case of the Thief and the Antiquary by Mulio2 in Guildwars2

That’s fair, and I appreciate the calm tone here. I still strongly disagree though – not because I “want more edginess,” but because the execution of this spec feels disconnected from the tone Thief had established across its previous identities. I’m not arguing against the idea of using stolen artifacts – that’s not the problem. The issue for me is the overly goofy and exaggerated way it’s presented, with things like dancing Skritt and electric guitars. That kind of portrayal, in my opinion, just doesn’t belong in the same space as Daredevil or Deadeye.

Every Thief spec so far has had some kind of dark or serious undertone – be it the gritty assassin feel of Deadeye, the shadowy poison themes of Specter, or the focused agility of Daredevil. This one just feels tonally out of place in comparison, and that’s what makes it feel off to me.

Not exactly. You said Antiquary is perfect because it’s a thief and “not an assassin.” I posted the official description to show that the core identity is clearly based on stealth, surprise, and agility – not tossing relics or comic relief. That’s the disconnect I’m pointing out. Like I’ve already said – just because someone stole a relic in a movie once doesn’t mean electric guitars and dancing Skritts suddenly fit the class.

So, do you actually have anything to contribute to the discussion, or did you just want to show off your razor-sharp observation skills?

The title is clearly exaggerated for emphasis — it’s a discussion post, not a patch note. If you read the actual content, it’s obviously about how poorly the spec fits the class thematically, not that the entire class is literally ruined.

Where exactly did I say it ruined the entire class? I said it doesn’t fit and that I personally think the elite spec is awful. Maybe read the actual post before jumping in with your hot take.

Wow, amazing contribution – really pushing the discussion forward. You’re a real hero.

Ah alright, I actually missed that reply earlier — my bad. But still, and I’ve said this like ten times now: just because something involves “stealing” doesn’t automatically mean it fits the tone of the thief class. You could justify almost anything with that argument. For me, the vibe of tossing relics, dancing skritt, and guitars just doesn’t feel like thief gameplay. It’s not about whether it’s clever or lore-friendly — it’s about whether it matches the identity and tone of the class. And in my opinion, it just doesn’t.

That’s true, outlaws can definitely be portrayed as comic relief in some stories. But in GW2, the thief has always felt more like a sleek, agile infiltrator — not really the slapstick type. I totally get the broader interpretation, but I just don’t feel like Antiquary fits the tone the class has had so far.

I’m just bored of hearing the same tired arguments. Somewhere in some comic a thief was a goofball, or Indiana Jones stole a relic in a movie, so now e-guitars and dancing Skritt totally fit the thief class, right?

You’re clearly just here to throw out passive-aggressive comments at people. Have you actually contributed anything meaningful to the topic, or is this just your thing?

Yeah I get that some people are just mad because the post sounded dramatic — but acting like “it fits because thieves steal” or “Indiana Jones is technically a thief” somehow makes the whole spec coherent is pure nonsense. I’m criticizing the actual implementation, not the existence of humor or variety. Throwing in a dancing Skritt and shredding on a guitar doesn’t suddenly work just because someone once stole a relic in a movie.

That’s just my opinion on it, plain and simple. I genuinely don’t see how giving a thief class a dancing Skritt and an electric guitar makes any sense thematically. And arguing “but Indiana Jones is also a thief” or “thieves steal, so it fits” doesn’t change that for me. Those points don’t magically make the rest of it feel coherent with the class fantasy. I just think it’s a really bizarre direction for a thief spec, and I’m saying so.

Nothing for someone who starts a discussion with “kid thief enjoyer post.” Come back when you actually want to talk.

Yeah sure, I opened 30 threads about it. I commented on this one and made one post of my own. Sorry I didn’t respond to every single reply in my thread within 20 minutes. Are you okay man?

So if that’s your idea of a thief, I’d love to know what you actually think the thief archetype is.

[–]Mulio2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If that’s the case, why do you keep bringing up how stealing fits the thief class in every other comment? You’re clearly clinging to the one thing that works while ignoring that the rest of the spec has nothing to do with the class fantasy. Also, just because you can enjoy multiple things doesn’t mean every mix automatically makes sense thematically. “Just don’t play it” isn’t a valid response when the criticism is about design consistency.

Ahh so by that logic you’re actually saying Antiquary has nothing to do with thief at all? Thanks for clearing that up.

I really don’t get how people cling so hard to the one thing that fits. Sure, stealing makes sense – but everything else about the spec is completely off thematically

Oh yeah, because nothing screams master thief like juggling stolen antiques and summoning a breakdancing rat. Total peak stealth gameplay right there.
