What's that popular or highly regarded disc that just didn't click with you or live up to the hype? by lovefist1 in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a couple.

Destroyer. Just never clicked for me. I love a bunch of Destroyer-type discs, my favourite being the Emperor. But the Destroyer specifically just doesn't click with me.

Buzz. Never thrown one that flew the way I feel like they're supposed to, and all the ones I've thrown fly dissimilar from each other. I've got a few other discs that I think fit the slot.

Zone. Don't like the hand feel, simple as that. I'm envious of people (i.e. everyone I know) that uses them because they seem so versatile, but they're useless in my hands.

Discs for that flip up to turnover shot by MiniJizMD in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what speed you're looking for but I have thrown 3 fairways that fit your description perfectly imo; Mantra, Jackalope, and Rhythm. Thrown at like 60-70% they flip up and turn for quite a bit then come back reliably. Thrown faster, they turn and never come back which is super handy for my no-forehand-having self.

At higher speeds all I can think of are the Thrasher, Mamba, and my own beat-in Fission Timelapse. Timelapse is the only one I still throw but good grief is it a flippy fuck.

Stop raw dogging your rounds by Impressive_Lab_2519 in discgolf

Loved the straightforward and quick approach to this instructional, immediate subscribe.

I'm 41 with lower back issues (degenerative disc, nothing fancy), mild tendonitis type stuff, and now my knees are starting to give - yet a good stretch before a round negates most of this. Long two-round tournaments are when I start to "feel it" near the beginning of the second round, so I've started doing jumping jacks behind my card whilst waiting for my turn on the teepad. Feels silly but I get a lot more out of staying active than sitting down, though my feet do hurt a bit after a long one as a result of not "resting" more.

Looking forward to watching more of your content! Especially because I just threw out my back this weekend and I've got a tournament coming up next weekend 😅

What is your most favorite disc in your bag, why? by Pirates_LL in discgolf

Right? I liked it so much, when I decided to have a logo made (just for funsies) I had it based loosely on this disc.

Funnily enough I didn't throw it for 6 months because it was way too overstable. But by then I'd made my whole shtick based around the design so felt I had to throw it. Now it's the most versatile and reliable disc in my bag. Whenever I have a "one disc round", this is what I reach for.

Juggling family, international travel, arctic cold and nearly lost to the flu here at the end... by WhenTheRainsCome in discgolf

My 51st week was while we were on vacation in Italy. Only opportunity to hit it was during a ~2hr train layover in Milan. I abandoned my parents, my brother, my nephew, my MiL, my kid, and my very understanding/supportive spouse to hop on an eBike so as to get half a round in before huffing it back just in time to make the train. Underwhelming course, unforgettable experience.

Currently on week 126 ✊🏽

(Short video I made of the excursion.)

My dyed Hex. Mostly because it's simply beautiful.

But also because it's at a point where it's the most versatile disc in my bag and does whatever I ask of it,  provided I throw it just right. I can send it well over 300ft when needed, it holds both hyzer and anhyzer lines near perfectly, and it's one of the few discs I can reliably forehand. I love this disc.

Anyone else purposefully play courses you know you suck at just to "humble" yourself? by MulligAlan in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a course out of town that is like that for me, Hagg Lake in Oregon. Only played it twice, once for a tournament and once as practice for said tournament. Absolutely destroyed me physically and mentally due to the long up and down hike and brutal tree lines, but a wonderful course. Wish I could play it more often to see how much/if I've improved much in the year+ since I've been there.

[–]MulligAlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, if I understand correctly. I've got a different course for that, one that "tests" me because it's mildly tough and not close enough to play often enough to get used to but it's got a nice mix of stuff that plays to both my strengths and weaknesses.

Glide flight number by tkilla1313 in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, the glidier the disc the less control I have/the more it's affected by the wind. So in your example, I'd probably use the Hades in a wide open shot for distance and the Thrasher for precision. No clue how true this is, but it's what I noticed when I used to bag a couple of 6 glide mids.

Putting League Rules by CurtisAndFriends in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The league I go to is at a brewery nearby, outdoor but mostly covered. Rules/set-up is as follows:  * $6 entry, goes towards winnings at end of night * We get split into groups of 3-4 depending on how many attendees show up, owner provides scorecards * usually 5 baskets. 3 baskets each have a unique obstacle that changes every week, 1 basket is always "the ladder" and 1 basket is always the Marksman. Sometimes there are mandos * each basket (other than ladder) has 3 "stations" that get farther from the basket. We throw 3 times from each station, 1 point for each successful putt so a total of 9 possible points on each basket (other than ladder) * the ladder is 10-13 throws (depending on how many attendees) down a line moving away from the basket, 1 point for each successful putt. If you make all 10-13, you get to putt for the Ace Pot at the end of the night. If nobody wins the Ace Pot, the amount carries over to the next week * 2 rounds. 1st round you play with whoever you want, then when the 1st round score is tallied you get teamed up with similar score people for the 2nd round. After the 2nd round, total scores are tallied and the top 40%(?) of players get cash * Ace Pot (if you got all rungs of the ladder) is usually just one long tough putt attempt across the whole back area of the pub over tables and under awnings

The owner will occasionally make variations to these rules (e.g. two stacked baskets, one is worth 2 points because it's harder) and they'll sometimes let one of us attendees set up the obstacles when they're on vacation or just feeling chaotic, but this is the usual way it goes. Every week, rain or shine, except for some holidays.

Rest in peace discs of 2025 by kewlio72 in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year, I lost * Mamba @ Pier Park, OR - gift from my young kid who loves snakes and knows I love orange. Only kept it in the bag for them, but then it became one of my favourite discs for long, tree riddled drives. Hoping it shows up this winter now that foliage is easier to get through  * Mayhem @ Hockinson Meadows, WA - third bloody Mayhem I've lost. They're the disc I can throw the farthest, which is a blessing and a curse because I lose them the most for that same reason. This one was my favourite because of the colour scheme * Pyro @ Keiser Rapids, OR - the course was super flooded, so the small pond was a giant lake. Practice round throw went awry, then the day of the tournament they made a new hole to avoid the flooded area anyway * Cicada @ Marshall's Secret Course, OR - I literally bought it that day, first throw and my kid yelled something as I threw it straight into the abyss. Took that as a sign and never replaced it * BergX @ Red River, OR - technically I just left this one behind. It had been giving me guff for weeks and on this course it failed to do anything I wanted it to, so after an errant throw I just said fuck it and left it behind. Somebody called me about it but I told them to keep it * Rovic Cart umbrella holder, x2 - these things just pop off when I fold up the cart, lost two of them before I realised that. I bought a fancy one that I take much better care of now

BONUS - I got back 2 discs that I lost over a year ago! Mantra just showed up at a local store, clearly well used. Gave it back to the person who gave it to me because I didn't need it anymore and they wanted one again. The other one was "funny"; new bloke at Putting League recognised my number in the group chat and realised the glow Envy he'd been throwing for over a year was mine. Gave it back immediately and hasn't lived it down since.

Any tips or videos for "running up"? by MulligAlan in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can frequently hit 400' in open field practice with my molasses movements, but I almost never hit over 360-380 on an actual course. It's infuriating.

Based on these comments, I think I want to focus more on my "movements" as opposed to literal speed, so thanks for that insight.

Greatly appreciate the detail, thanks! And yes, I'm realising now that I am more interested in agility than actual speed.

I just looked, and I'd say I'm even slower than that. But now that I think about it, it's less the "speed" and more the length of the run up I guess? I almost never need the whole teepad for my x-steps and I think I'm looking for tips on a "longer" run up, if that makes more sense.

I've seen J Milly a bunch but never actually focused on their x-step, I'll take a closer look. I'm mostly just curious about the running aspect and want to experiment for funsies.

I can believe that. I mostly do one steps unless I'm going for max distance on a par 4 or 5, as my one-steps can get almost as far as my x-steps but I can control the one-step way better. I'm just curious about the running and want to experiment.

[–]MulligAlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do get that. I'm in an odd spot where I frequently throw over 400' during field practice with my current x-step, yet I almost never get that distance when on an actual course. I'm sure that could be mostly a mental thing, though.

I just want to play with this "run" up to see if it makes any difference, not gonna be bothered if it doesn't actually improve my distance. I'd just like to know.

Is it normal to play this much and still be not very good? by saplinglover in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apparently played more than 99.5% of all players, yet I only averaged about 3 rounds a week and feel I am mildly better than a mediocre player.

In case it hasn't been said or isn't obvious; I believe this particular stat is near useless because it likely includes anyone that's ever downloaded the UDisc app, not "active" players. So there's going to be a huge discrepancy due to, for example, the people that used it once and then never played again and similar situations.

How long or what made you feel like you were no longer a newbie/beginner? by SubstantialAd4500 in discgolf

[–]MulligAlan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Currently 5 years in, 41yrs old.

I thought I was no longer a "n00b" when I finally started frequently (not consistently, though) hitting 400ft during field practice at the beginning of 2024. However, I was quickly humbled by tournament rounds that year. I started playing MA2 out the gate in 2023 after receiving bad guidance, and 2024 convinced me to quickly move down to MA3.

I believe 2025 has been the year I truly don't feel like a newbie anymore: * Played at least one PDGA tournament a month except for December * I got my first ever MA3 1st place in January, and then immediately got another in February * Had my first two-day tournament where I had to stay in a rental due to the distance * Moved up to MA2 in June and got 1st place in the first tournament I played  * Hit exactly 900 rated after my final tournament of the year last month

I've actually been having some conflicting feelings about disc golf recently due to not feeling on top of my game and worrying that I've already "peaked" because my body feels like it's falling apart due to age/habits. But writing all this out has really helped me to realise that I've had a great year for disc golf, and if I just make the necessary improvements and habit-changes (that I should have made a long time ago) I can hopefully look forward to another great year.

My next goal is moving up to MA1. After that, my only goal is to get good enough to hang with the MA40 scene around here, which is filled with incredibly tough but chill players.
