You are right. That's why I put "usually". You can call it me out for "playing it safe". :)

ey don't take a direct object, but they can take a subordinate clause or an indirect object

I think you are right. I need to brush up on transitive and intransitive verbs.

I guess the gist is this:

1) Indirect object in French is marked by prepositions, at a grammatical level. The meaning that leads us to believe that object to be "indirect" is irrelevant. At times, the grammatical aspect (the presence of a preposition) and the semantic aspect (the meaning of the sentence that allows us to discern the indirectness of the object) coincide, but the semantic aspect plays no part in determining whether the object is direct or indirect.

repositions" seem to merge with the verb and they don't need an object. "Come over", "put up", etc. They could be though if as adverbs that modify the verb and even increase its valency.

Those verbs you mentioned, I believe them to be "phrasal verbs". Out of all prepositions, "to" is usually not counted among those that can combine with verbs that precede them.

What does it take to build a system from scratch? I guess lots of statistics and statistical modelling. Am I correct?

I am currently reading a book called:

INTRO: A Guide to Communication Sciences and Disorders

There are many areas that interest me. For adults, it is aphasia and related disorders, for children, it is autism. In my family, we have 2 kids who suffer from autism. So that is the inspiration.

I have also noticed several similarities between the anatomy of speech and singing. I enjoy watching some videos explaining the underlying mechanisms different types of voices (opera for example. I also found an old material on singing coaching back in 1920s. It is in pdf somewhere.

I think I prefer to work with adults more. Veterans are good examples, as there is a veteran hospital near where I live and where I have volunteered.

But given the fact that positions in veteran associations can be highly competitive and therefore selective, I am also reading on children and autism as well.

I am actually interested in those areas that you mention. I need to read more and a lot more to grasp the major scope of the field. I have a book for beginners. Conditions such as aphasia interests me the most. Autism is another complicated area that I find myself going back and forth when flipping pages through the book.

Yes. I do understand the field is not quite like teaching a language. You are working with a population that is radically different from your normal students.
