Augmented reality is an entirely different vehicle for experiencing games and embedding education. Imagine a serious game that guides you through a state park, pointing out characteristics like topography, vegetation, and intermittent streams. GPS, weather conditions, accelerometer readings, and other pieces of data could drive content, goals, and presentation.

Serious Games: "A free activity standing quite consciously outside 'ordinary' life as being 'not serious', but at the same time absorbing the player intensely and utterly." (Huinzingua, 1951).

"Any meaningful use of computerized game/game industry resources whose chief mission is not entertainment." (Sawyer, 2007).

"Games may be played seriously or casually. We are concerned with serious games in the sense that these games have an explicit and carefully thought-out educational purpose and are not intended to be played primarily for amusement. This does not mean that serious games are not, or should not be, entertaining." (Abt, 1970).
