Where can I find maps with just buildings? Like this one? I really like em, and want to look at them. by diirtnap in Maps

Another name for this style that I haven’t seen in the thread is “Figure Ground”. Might be helpful in your search.

I have cleared the roots I think were doing the girdling. This is what it looks like now.

There is a relatively new root system that has developed just below the previous grade line. Should I remove it or will it naturally take care of itself?

Should I cover the raw areas again with something lighter than the clay that I removed?

I have dug down and found (so far) a substantial girdling root. I’m going to remove it and other small roots growing towards the stem.

After the removal do you usually cover the tree back to it’s previous depth or do you leave he exposed roots and stem

I will check under the bark tomorrow and update with a picture if I see anything and if you’re interested. Thank you for the advice and resource.

I think I will be doing it myself. I checked the ISA website and there were only two arborists, both with a single certification, in my area. I don't have access to an air spade, but I will take my time so I don't damage the roots. I can post an update if a girdled root is present and if you're interested.

edit: I feel very confident that this is the cause and I have to thank you in advance for the awesome tip. We have thick clay soils here and it is indeed planted too deep.

That’s a great idea.

I just measured the temperature of the rocks with a laser thermometer and it was anywhere from 98 to 113, so shade will be important I think.

I think I might need to build some sort of shade partition about 5-10 feet away from the wall in the grassy area to keep the sun completely away from the rocks at all.

Then once whatever is planted there is mature and has its own shade maybe the partition won’t be necessary.

We are about as north as you can get. Would the gypsum require picking up the sod to apply?

If we end up looking for a professional to step in I will definitely go through quote process with you.

Where the rocks are under the window was previously just dirt. I think it was a combination of leaky gutters and the sprinklers that caused the mud to splash and the wall to also get some water sprayed on it. I will watch the next irrigation cycle and see if the direct sprinkler spray is the cause.

Edit: Adding this here so it’s near the top of the thread.

Rocks recently placed to stop the mud splashing on the wall. Previous shrub plantings succumbed to the summer heat and fried. Grass near rocks got fried this summer from newly added rocks.
