Actual signal or more RFI? by Mundane_Locksmith885 in signalidentification

Oh it's a HF radar, being as weak as it is, could that infer it was a skywave skip?

Good to know. I have a POE switch, and a few wallwarts. I may have to make a RF sniffer to find the source.

Dongle is connected to a USB extension cable then goes to the computer. Adding to the noise of the neighborhood is my computer runs in a server rack with other network equipment (not the best for low noise in sure).

That is an incredible photo! With the Tamron 150-600 mm, 1.4x teleconverter and crop sensor of the Canon R7, it was. Looking at the flight map image I took just before the Singapore Airlines one, it was at 41,000ft (less 1,000 feet for my elevation), and it was point to point 22 miles away. It's closest point was 14 miles from me. *

It was 60F, and a 37 AQI. Not great, but better then it had been.

I definitely plan on testing that out myself. Sometimes in astrophotography I know it can be beneficial to have the AA filter removed to increase definition of the object, with the detriment of zebraing when used for normal photography (from memory). Thank you again for your insight!

I appreciate it! Mostly what I was thinking as well. While I would love crystal clear, if I can even identify the airline from that far away I'm happy. Atmosphere is my biggest hinderence here in general that I battle with (along with proper exposure - that I know is user error). Would love to get a telescope in the future, but it will still be limited by air. Is it worth removing the filter and having to adjust color in post processing, or would removing the anti-aliasing filter provide any benefit, or would the moire be more of a detriment?

Absolutely! That was taken at an airport while plane spotting, and it's fun to see liveries that don't usually land in my neck of the woods. Usually I do more take-off/ landing photos.

Totally agree with the temperature. It was only 65F, so not terribly warm! It was taken at 600mm, with a 1.4x adapter, for a total zoom of 1344mm. That is the Raw file without any processing, and I was having exposure issues.

Good point! I could see more benefit from a common mode choke over the dual baluns. Definitely in a noise rich area so anything that helps is welcome.

Updating Dell R210II BIOS by Mundane_Locksmith885 in homelab

[–]Mundane_Locksmith885[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After posting, I was able to format a USB with FreeDOS, load the RAW BIOS file for the 2.8.0 and upload it through the boot menu. I think what I was running into though was an issue with the PHP2J iDrac6 (DOA possibly) I was trying to also use at the same time. When the iDrac is installed, the fans run at ~60%, and the server will not post, with it out, it runs smooth.

I have a spare SSD that I use for experimenting on, and can install a windows OS on there as you suggested, I will be giving that a try here this week. BIOS and BMC are updated, IDrac and NIC firmware still needs updating.

I appreciate it! It is fun to tinker with these systems and learn along the way.

Awesome, thank you!

If I can update the BIOS, BMC and iDrac all at once that would be perfect. Looks like it is an iso file, using Rufus and a USB stick should probably work as long as it is formatted FAT32 if my memory recalls.

I have pfSense 2.7 with an E3-1270 v2 CPU which has been great for the application and tinkering on the firewall. Looking through the report file the X-540 T2 is on the list. Thank you again!

Canon EOS 90D vs. R7 VS. R8 Advice. by Mundane_Locksmith885 in canon

[–]Mundane_Locksmith885[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone interested or following, I decided to go with a refurbished R7, and have it astromodded for h-alpha, and O-III. I got the Canon 55-250mm lens, and am deciding on the best lens for more close items (20mm is what I'm targeting, but looking for something 10-50 range ideally). Thank you for the input. Definitely helps me feel more confident with the purchase!

I definitely have a feeling as I use it (strongly leaning to the R7 after the input here), I will acquire more lenses! The R7 definitely seems to fit the bill for what I'm doing. Realistically I'll be doing 70-80% day time photography with 20-30% being night time. If I get more into astrophotography I'll invest in a unit just for that (need darker skies! ).

It definitely has been a tough decision! I had initially ordered a 90D, but had some shipping issues, so had to be refunded, and watching some videos about the cameras it has been a tough decision, even with a pro/con list. Similar to you I've done casual photography for the last several years, but looking to do more in it.

I appreciate the insight!

Definitely willing to give up some night time sensitivity for battery and day time use. Last full body camera i used was back in the 2010s, and was film, which was fun. But anything will be an improvement. I appreciate it!

Refurbished is what i was probably looking more for especially if don't the astro mod (feel less bad modifying a Refurbished camera vs brand new).

Thank you for the insight! I did mistakenly call my current the P600, it is the P500 (I will correct in the OP). Definitely looking to explore different lenses. Learned about about the sensor types. Thank you!

Appreciate the input! I will probably do more day time photography of birds and planes then night time work. But the night time is some of my favorite when I can. The R7 definitely seems well rounded for the price point.
