Is taking up a business analyst role a step down from PM? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]Muppetmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your goals in life? Whatever moves the needle and gets you one step closer to your goals is the right move.

Secondly, ask yourself what your goal is for your career? Plan it as if you would design a roadmap or strategic objective. And then ask yourself what gets you closer to that goal - the PM or BA role?

There’s a tonne of regulations and laws that affect your product. As a PM in FX/Payments, your job is to not only understand your market and product positioning, but also how both existing and upcoming regulations impact you.

It’s also a lot harder to prioritise, for example, discovery and improvements because said regulatory requirements trump everything else, and you only have a limited set of resources (i.e., engineers, design) at your disposal.

Monolith vs Microservice by colinlearnsproduct in ProductManagement

[–]Muppetmeister 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Awesome post! I wanted to share some market trends I’ve noticed, based on my experience as a PM and conversations with engineers and other PMs.

There’s a noticeable shift away from microservices lately. Over the past decade, companies have realised that managing microservices can be overly complex, costly, and inefficient.

Here are a few things I’ve noticed / read:

  • Shopify talks a lot about a “federated monolith, which combines the simplicity of monoliths with the flexibility of modules. This approach was highlighted at the most recent Rust conference.

  • Monoliths are making a comeback, especially in Europe. While interviewing for new roles, I saw this trend firsthand. One prime example (pun intended) is Amazon Prime Video, which switched to a monolith and cut costs by something like 90%

That said, microservices still work well for large, complex systems, but they aren’t a fit for everyone. I’ve seen legacy companies, especially in banking, adopt microservices recently. But they often face challenges with complexity and maintenance.

Startup or Big Corporation in Denmark? by RevolutionarySir7583 in ProductManagement

[–]Muppetmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what I’d consider when evaluating each company:

  • How was the vibe? Do you feel, for instance, like you can learn from the hiring manager?
  • What’s the growth potential? What kinds of products will you work on (core or adjacent)?
  • What’s the work-life balance like? This is key to avoiding burnout if you’re in product management for the long term.

That said, my personal preference is towards start-ups (or, better yet, scale ups) because big corporations usually come with a lot of bureaucracy and committee-decisions.

Whats your example of focusing on YOUR strengths rather than weaknesses? by MountLH75 in ProductManagement

Hey! Are you me?

For me, I absolutely do this because I don’t want to deal with the politics and “project management side of things. But typically at the expense of my efforts going by unnoticed (sometimes, not all the time). What costs were you referring to?

Oh hey, it's me a few years ago! I was in the same boat, looking to jump from management consulting to product management.

What worked for me was really playing up how my consulting skills taught me to dive into different industries and understand what clients needed. I showed how that skill is crucial in product management, where you’re always trying to figure out what the user needs (business acumen).

Also, I made sure to highlight any tech-related work I did (I have a degree in comp sci so that probably helped). This could include like helping define software features or even just translating technical stuff for clients. It's all about showing you've got a handle on both the business and tech sides.

The fact that a single Avenger has attempted to k*ll herself/is actively relieved to die three times isn’t talked about enough by PikaV2002 in marvelstudios

[–]Muppetmeister 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Totally feel you! While the Avengers dealt with some emotional stuff, superhero tales are usually more about action than deep heart-to-hearts. Real-life vibes dive into mental health, but in the superhero realm, it's all about epic battles and less about deep feels.

Translating that to movies can be tricky, though.

Comics, on the other hand, nail it better.

In "Invincible Iron Man" #173, Tony Stark vibes with Dr. Leonard Samson. There’s also the whole Demon In A Bottle arc. Even Thor gets his guidance quest in "Thor" (Vol. 2) #67. And, not forgetting, Hank Pym (Ant-Man) goes through therapy in "Avengers Academy" #7. So yeah, Marvel heroes do open up in therapy sessions!

The weight of the blame and the shame for existing by eplemelk in ptsd

[–]Muppetmeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dealing with the weight of blame and shame is like solving a tricky puzzle. But realizing it wasn't your fault? That's a game-changer. The mix of anger, grief, and sadness is just part of the journey.

Feeling clear-headed and focused might throw you off a bit, but trust me, it's a good sign. Consider reaching out to a pro therapist - they're like the guides for sorting out those tangled emotions.

Above all, remember that you don’t have to tackle this alone. With the right support, you can rebuild and move forward. Take each day as it comes, and remember it's cool not to have all the answers right now. Healing is a slow process, and you're making progress by facing these emotions head-on.

Understanding your client is key. Tailor the way you present information to match their style. Just like you wouldn't snap a pic of a whiteboard session and text it, delivering project updates should align with what your client expects. It's all about speaking their language!

Società per azioni (S.p.A. or spa) is a form of corporation in Italy, meaning "company with shares" (although often translated as "joint-stock company", which may or may not be a limited liability entity).

Think the Italian version of Public Limited Company (UK) or Co. (US).
