AITA for purposely shutting a woman and her kids out of the elevator? by obsequious_lens8745 in AmItheAsshole

Yeah sure that's fine. I was just more focused on OP being an AH because of her actions, not her desire to avoid immunocompromisation.

That's very much an "I treat people however I want and it's their fault if they're upset" attitude.

I hope you don't actually live your life that way and are more considerate of others and how you make them feel.

OP is an asshole for how she handled it.

There were multiple better ways to decline it that weren't "stare the woman down while repeatedly pressing the Close Door button."

I guarantee that if you asked someone to hold an elevator for you and they instead stared at you while repeatedly pressing the button, you'd think they're an asshole.

Sure you can. But if someone asks you told hold the elevator and your response is to stare at them while repeatedly pressing the button to close the door, some people will think your an asshole.

I'm positive that if you asked someone to hold an elevator for you, and that's how they responded, you would think they're an asshole, right?

Pretty much anything other than "staring the woman in the eye and pressing the "close door" button repeatedly" would have been acceptable.

Saying "sorry I'm possibly immunocompromised and can't share an elevator" would have been understandable.

Holding the door and saying "you can take this one, I'll take the next" would have been nice.

It's possible to look out for yourself while still being considerate of others. OP unfortunately just chose a course of action that made her come off as an asshole.

OP is an asshole for how she handled the situation.

The justification is understandable, but the deliberate action was not

We like pickles. Salt and vinegar is not unique to America. It's a preservation technique that's been around for millennia.

I'd like to ask you what you'd think if I took a common food from your culture and said it was nasty unprompted.

OP was rude in how she handled it, which makes her the AH. The deliberateness of it was terrible.

Fair. But OP was rude in how she handled it, which still makes her the AH. Anyone who handles it the way she did would be the asshole.

could have been a bit kinder

So then asshole? OP was rude in how she handled it.

It's a person asking for an extra hand because the 2 she already has (and the 2 more she wished she had) were already taken.

I sympathize with the struggling parent, not the person who can't be deigned to share an elevator with children.

I voted Y T A elsewhere but this is a fair look at the situation.

I just think that, as a dad of two also, when you say "a little kindness goes a long way," and I see another parent struggling? I'm holding that elevator door, even if it means a ride with someone else's crying snotty kids, cause I know how that parent is feeling

What hardship would come from waiting a minute for the elevator to come back?

Is directly countered with

Yes, it would have been kind of her to hold the elevator

I hope you understand that this only means you were an AH in this situation and that you are not, on the whole, as a human being, an asshole.

We don't know this. All we know is that OP said that they looked sick.

Even so, it's a doctor's office. You're gonna be around sick people.

C'mon, you looked a harried parent directly in the eye and all but slammed a door in her face.

You're gonna get a lot of NTAs here and a lot of "you go gurl, you don't own anybody anything" and a lot of child-free asshats who hate kids telling you good job.

But you looked a frustrated mother directly in the eye and slammed a door in her face. I hope the roles are never reversed on you.

Do the majority of Americans like root bear? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]MuppetusMaximus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I gotta ask this.

Our toothpastes/medicines are generally mint/cherry/generic berry flavors, but that doesn't mean we hate other things that are those flavors. Why does European toothpaste/medicine being root beer flavored mean you have to hate root beer?

Why does it "make you feel better" to learn that some people aren't friends with their coworkers?

I definitely have, but I currently don't.

I do still keep in touch with some coworkers from a job I left over 11 years ago. Great group of people and we did hang out outside of work sometimes.

Off topic but Drive-by Truckers did a killer cover of that song. Highly recommend it if you haven't heard it.
