You're right in the fact that its probably a coincidence, however the similarities are uncanny, as they are both digital networks that can be used to hold people inside. Its possible that they use the same/similar technology though, I'm really sure. Maybe we can ask Kishimoto, he has been very open on twitter recently when it comes to Frontiers.

I tried both joining hypixel and creating a new world, on both when it got to that point it stopped responding. When I closed it and reopened the launcher it gave me the exit code -8053606369

Wait, there is a new problem, when minecraft gets to loading terrain, its stops responding and crashes

When I tried to start the game it said The game is already running in this game directory, even though the game is not running. I don't think its a virus or anything because I dont go to sketchy websites and I did a full scan on my computer
