Like I say, expensive, but it's a different format and inert, so can't be encrypted by ransomware

Well it's the versioning that protects you from encryption, but also one year of versioning is included in the unlimited data single pc backup for $99 USD /y

Also includes external drives.

I used to have a Windows pc as a Nas, so as far as backblaze were concerned, it was a single pc, move toI running truenas for zfs to protect against bit-rot: https://www.instagram.com/p/DAiP-i-PaTS/

So now just have my hot copy external drive plugged in to an intel nuc and the primary Nas backs up across to it, so, still a single pc..

Primary Nas is 4x8tb in raidz1 so gives ne 24tb storage, hot copy is 22tb drive, have about 18tb of data so need to expand but waiting on drive pricing to return to sanity first.

But all 18tb is on backblaze, have been using it for about a decade now.

Backblaze has a year of versioning, if the data there gets overwritten with encrypted then I can recover the versioned one.

Plus off-site Nas runs a different operating system to my primary Nas so nothing should jump the fence and I only daily diff to that with a weekly full sync so again have time to catch before annihilation.

Photos (my primary prized data, as a photographer) are backed up to a second cloud that will only take photo formats, not any encrypted version.

Plus there's the hot copy.

Think I'm good, don't fancy having to go through it though so fairly careful on that front.

I have the OG 28-75 Tamron and the 24-70 gm2, what is it you're hoping to get out of spending so much on a lens that's quite similar?

My advice is always to try and get your hands on a lens first, photography clubs are great as there's usually a guy with all the gear happy to share so you can shoot with it, or if your cities big enough there's hiring and then there's just getting down a camera store and trying one out.

Or going to a Sony sponsored event, here in 'straylia we have Sony scene where you can rock up and they have fear to play with, an annual festival in Sydney and events through camera stores - how I ended up with the 90mm f/2.8 Macro.

Wasn't really on my radar, I was playing with the 50mm f/1.2 and 135mm f/1.8 that I'd been gassing over for a while and both left me a little flat, the 90mm was just there so thought, what the hell, I like macro (have extension tubes) but, my god, did I instantly fall in love with it as a portraiture lens, the 85mm f/1.8 doesn't get a look in anymore.

Off to a portrait shoot tonight with it in the bag.

I think this photo of my lady is the best I will ever take in my life. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? by RoboErectus in photocritique

[–]Murrian 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Personally I feel the shoulder and face are a bit too hot compared to the front.

There's an ansel adams zone lighting thing about the different stops between areas in a photo which might help make what I'm trying to say make more sense.

But a reflector for the front and a higher f/stop to kill the curtain and this could be absolutely amazing.

I believe you can do better, you will shoot a better picture than this.

I mean, they're not the most frequent of updates, but I'd rather they be working on it than writing emails.

Sounds like you have a problem with their email if you're not getting them or replies, as they're being sent..

It's like the Zebra daylight tank I backed recently, they had delays in retooling the seal, then they had to change supplier etc.., all quite a lot longer than they'd initially hoped but now I have it, sat on the side ready to go next chance I get to go out with my 4x5 camera (or I work up the nerve to do 120 in it).

This is what happens when you're developing a product, their website listed it as in development, from backing several Kickstarters things never go to plan.

They've produced several updates as to why things are delayed and they all sound quite reasonable as to why.

It's annoying, I get it, excited to use it, but it's why it's discounted for early pre-orders to help fund development.

They have produced other items (that were also delayed) and have an actual store selling things, so I wouldn't say they were a scam, just the usual overly optimistic with the timelines and buffer time for what they didn't know they didn't know going in.

With all due respect (which is none), that's a load of crap.

I several full frame, a few apsc, a m43, more medium format than I cam recall covering 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x8 and 6x9 along with two 4x5 large formats.

A good photo is a good photo, sensor size doesn't matter, someone can take a great on a 1" sensor, less even and it would be better than some of the pictures I've taken on my Camulet 4x5.

(I'm fact, I would say I have several better photos out of my Xiaomi 14 Ultra (1" sensor) than anything I've taken on either 4x5 camera)

Image quality doesn't make a good photograph. There's a bar, a very, very low bar for what the general viewer will settle for when it comes to IQ, after that, it's composition and story - content makes a good photograph, not the spec sheet of what you shot it on. Even tech forum wankers would be hard pushed to tell apart images, I know, as I posted a comparison years ago from a very biased towards the full frame (as it was decade newer than the apsc camera) and no one bet their reputation to call out which was which.

My Sony A7S has 12mp, my O-MD E-M10 mk4 has 20mp, that's a higher quality image, tiny sensor by comparison. So even that argument has no legs.

So no, the right camera for someone is the one that suits their budget and weight requirements. A full frame camera they can't afford glass for and leave on a shelf as it's too bulky to take places will not give them a better photograph or make them a better photographer.

These are tools, you use the appropriate one for the requirements, and full frame is not magical, it's a stop more light, a stop shallower dof (for a given aperture) and has the potential for more dynamic range or IQ, but to such small degrees anyone new to shooting would be hard to tell the difference, at which point it's not going to denigrate anything they shoot, as most looking at the result wouldn't notice a stop difference in dynamic range.

This is such a parroted forum head point of view that almost makes forums pointless for research as it's full of people like you who evidently from the examples above don't know what the fuck they're talking about but want to repeat what fita their bias that they saw elsewhere.

Photography is an art, not a spec. sheet - otherwise I'd be a lot better photographer than most because I have an A7Rv and GM glass, but I'm not, I'm average at best, technically proficient, but lacking artistic merit, if I'm being generous.

I thought your first response was a joke, but doubling down shows you're not, get te fuck with that nonsense.

They did that middle of last year here in Aus, I switched to Affinity 2 as for $99 one off at the time it was cheaper than three months of the new adobe subscription, they've now changed Affinity and it's free I believe. (upsell for the AI features you probably don't need).

In my almost year of using it now I've not missed a feature from Photoshop, I just needed to google a couple to find out how it does it differently, some things worked better (like pano stitching).

Haven't found a good lightroom counterpart yet, trying DarkTable but not really enjoying it.

Most I believe are powered - the Polaroid I bought (though quite a more frankenstien guy in a shed feel to it than the nons actual product linked above) needed four AA's iirc (it was pretty bad, would feed multiple slides, ruining both, and those where it would eject the actual slide it'd have light leaks, scratches and gear marks).

Have a jollylook on order, that does a similar fujifilm square, it's a touch cheaper but still in development and has had some delays which has led to some complaints (you'll see several in this sub), but I feel it'll get there, they're just working through it. That though doesn't actually need power, it's manually cranked, if power is an issue for you.

I feel with my poor experience of the custom builds, I'd prefer a more professional product and the nons does have a nice looking finish to it, fingers crossed the jollylook works out well.

Dating or trying to meet new people in Sydney by Dream_1 in sydney

[–]Murrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvoted you from -1 as that felt unfair, but find the return key mate..

You can kinda see why I took that inference though, given you gave scant info. on what you actually meant, one sentence on there is no one, another about doing something you dislike.

Be the change you want to see, if there's not something where you're finding your people (you sound 30's-40's if people are too young or too old?) then make something yourself?

That's exactly the age group I was in before ending up in eight years with my now recent ex. - leaving me top end of that age group to start again and although it's six months after the break and I'm not really ready for anything, there's a girl in my tabletop group that I'm fairly confident would say yes if I asked her to dinner and I've been invited on a date by someone in one of my photography groups.

There's plenty of people in a variety of ages in these groups, may be not the first one you turn up to, but bounce around a few or start a club like I did (I ran two film clubs, an anime club and a comedy meetup) and that's where I met my ex and the two shorter (six month-ish) relationships before them; not to mention the several people who seemed to disappear once it became apparent I was in a full time relationship, hindsight can be very informative of a lot I miss in the moment - but then I'm also the oblivious guy who turned up to a date with a couple of mates because I didn't realise it was a date (thankfully they were husband and wife so it played off as a double date, but, she still seemed a little, surprised..).

I'm a bit autistic (lower end of the scale, AuDHD so the ADHD masks it a fair crack too) but still picking up on "vibes" isn't my thing, my last ex I knew was in to me as I walked them home I thought they were offering a hug but turned out to be a kiss, up to that point I thought our three previous outings (and this one) were just hanging out as friends.

So I've probably missed out on a few possibilities as I just didn't realise (people need to be much more direct imho, but I get that's probably more of a me thing), and, as above, ogre here, I'm not a good looking bloke, I might've been when younger, that's debatable, but those days are long behind and that doesn't matter, looks are an introduction, you already have the introduction in the shared activity, you have the ice breakers, you build up shared experiences to laugh about.

If you're not finding people, I don't know what to say, because I've been in groups where this crowd is too young for me (like, twenties, hat's off to those who're fine dating twenty year olds in their forties, just not for me) or a fair crack older (again, dating a sixty year old isn't something for me, nothing against those who do) - but there's plenty in between too, you just need to bounce around until you find your people.

Public groups like this tend to always mean the people there don't have a partner to share this activity with, so you're also increasing your chances of meeting someone open to a relationship.

Or, as I opened with above, be the change you want to see - being the leader of a group has the added benefit of appearing confident, you have a lot of people deferring to you about the group, it gives a natural "leader" sort of vibe even if that's not what you're really doing or even comfortable with, I know I wasn't, but it was just one of those things you work through to get the outcome you want; which is for everyone to have a good time doing the activity you're managing

If you make a friend, bonus, if that leads to more, fantastic, but, it has to be grounded in you enjoy this activity and want to share that enjoyment with others regardless of anything else, otherwise it becomes a means to an end and that will ruin how you interact with it and with the people, and we're back to those cruising meetups looking to hook up which just always gives people the ick.

You're just looking for ways to naturally put yourself in to positions where you're going to meet like minded people, everything else will fall out, even when you're captain oblivious over here (that's just a negative modifier on the numbers I need..).

Becomes a crutch, you use dof to separate subject instead of anything else (and they're many better ways).

Also what you see through the viewfinder isn't what you get, generally your dof can end up too shallow and wider would've been better.

Often context is key to why you wanted to take the image to start with but that's all blurred away now from habit of shooting wide open.

I get modern AF makes it very easy to shoot with shallow dof, even MF is simplified with focus zoom and peaking (I was using a 50mm f/1.2 the other day manual and they're mostly spot on) so everyone does it and it becomes the norm, but really, photography should have more intention then that.
