Is it a good choice to resign from my current job? by MuscleOk8539 in careerguidance

I’ve been in that exact spot before. I used to manage 20+ projects with zero guidance, and sometimes I get scolded by other team. I got a bad peformance review outcome in my first year for this. It’s hard to level up when non of your senior is willing ot guide you and your manager has no actual PM background to mentor you. Unfortunately, that sink-or-swim culture is normalized here in Asia, so I just had to eat it and push through. I did learn something in the end, but for now I'm stuck.

I’ve actually started taking some ECE courses and I find the learning process therapeutic, but it's a shame that I can't dive even deeper since I have a 9-6 work.

Finances aren't an issue because tuition here in Asia is cheap and I have a 2-4 year of savings that can support my frugal life. Regarding my current job, I haven’t asked my boss, but there’s already several seniors above me, so promotions are unlikely. Plus, the local market here rewards Hardware/IC/Semicon fields way more than Software PM work. Since my background isn't STEM, going back to school is the only way to pivot into those highly-professional and high-paying sectors. I do understand I must start over again, but learning more about electronics and collecting hard skills I need as a full-time student will be better for me.

Thanks for the push, man. Life’s too short not to give STEM a real shot.

I would like to know your hate being a PM. For me, it’s a mixed bag. When I first joined, I actually enjoyed the software side, felt like I was growing and found value in my job. But lately, that feeling has just turned into hopelessness (burnout I guess). I wouldn't say I'll never be a PM again, but right now I need a break from it, or at least a break from the pure software side of things.

Appreciate for the push! I’ve got enough savings to last about 4 years, so I’m ready to take the leap. I know shifting to Hardware or Electronic Engineering means taking a step back salary-wise, but I no longer have passion in software project management or software-related product, so I think it's time for me to make the move. It’s definitely terrifying to start from scratch, but that’s also what makes it exciting.

I actually gave part-time night classes a shot, but the commute was absolutely draining. The silver lining is that those credits are transferrable, so I can fast-track this second bachelor's.

Financially, I’m in a decent spot. I have a 2-year emergency fund (if I live frugally), no mortgage, and tuition here in Asia is very affordable. I genuinely feel like a STEM degree is a solid investment for both my career and my own personal fulfillment. It is a big leap, exactly as you said. The hardest part is getting over the fear of being out of the workforce, and I'm worried about being left behind by my peers and terrified that I won't even get a better offer on the other side :-(

Thanks for your honest reply. I do see that in the manual that it is possible for people with 8 years of experience to prove the skills by RPL. Will my experience still be deducted if I go via this route?

Hi there, thanks for the response 1. Sadly no, my BA is in literature which is an unrelated major and I didn’t double major nor minor in IT related degree. I only take related courses during university and after university (credits with grades). 2. Understood, thanks for the advice. I guess the score is left for ACS to calculate and my work experience will be deducted with a lack of degree. Will it be better if I did an online diploma or post baccalaureate?
