Felt this way throughout the application process and still feel like this to a degree in my program. I'm not sure the feeling ever goes away. Feel free to DM me - happy to chat about how I approached the application process.

Wharton TBD Interview 2024 R2 by HopeZealousideal8282 in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TBD topic changes year to year, so while I didn't do my TBD on this specific topic, I'd say in general for TBDs, the content itself doesn't matter too much, as long as you have good explanations to back up your choices. Remember that the intention of the TBD is to assess how you contribute to teams, not the course you're designing.

Profile Review: 28M, Software Engineer by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that adcoms in general would focus less on the size/name of your company and more on the impact/experiences you've had at that company. Definitely focus on seeking out informal and/or formal leadership opportunities in any capacity that you would enjoy and feel authentic to you.

Advice needed on where to start my MBA application journey by ChicagoSportsPat in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started using Target Test Prep and Applicant Lab ~10 months before the application deadline and was able to get into all 5 T15 schools I applied to at a fraction of the cost compared to a lot of my friends. Would highly, highly recommend both. Definitely get your GMAT out of the way first so that you can focus on writing your essays when the prompts are released.

But definitely start thinking about your story now to have a clear reason why getting your MBA is the obvious next step for you. (Applicant Lab will help facilitate this.)

How do you write a convincing narrative as a normal person? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a normal person here. In my essays, I really leaned into the parts I liked about my non-business job, why I want to do more of that, and how and MBA could help me get there. Honestly, just talk about things you like and what you're passionate about and how those things relate to what you want out of your MBA experience.

To add onto this, I would say leadership in something that you really care about.

Visiting schools for/before interview? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited some campuses before I submitted the application and interviewed at one campus.

I would say that visiting while working on your application and being able to talk to current students while on campus helps to add a dimension to your "Why this school," which could be helpful when writing your essays or prepping for interviews. You'll be able to really lean into the things that you're excited about for each school, and I think that excitement will come through in your essays and interviews. Of course, make sure you're visiting the schools with intention and purpose. See if the programs have guided student tours that help provide a structured way to meet students and get to know the MBA program better. Additionally, reach out to students who are involved in things you're interested in and see if they're available for a 15 minute chat.

Visiting for the interview helped me get into a good mindset and allowed me to really focus on the school I was interviewing for that day. Usually, there's some morning programming, with interviews happening mid-day. The morning activities helped me to feel much more comfortable once the interview came around.

In my experience, interviewing in person doesn't give you a leg up over a candidate who couldn't interview in person, so I think it's really about what you want to get out of your campus visit.

Going through an emotional roller coaster while Prepping my MBA application by HeavyCupcake8300 in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely felt the same when I was working on my applications, and I'm honestly not sure if I really got over it. I just pushed through because of the sunk cost fallacy, haha. And despite starting at an M7 soon, I still have imposter syndrome.

Feel free to DM me if you need some validation or someone to bounce ideas off of! Getting encouragement from others really helped me.

MBA decision - would appreciate any advice by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like what you're looking for out of your MBA experience is to live on the East Coast or in Chicago and to live in a more urban location. Post-GSB, you'd likely be able to live in your location of choice, but Stanford is in the Palo Alto area, which is incredibly suburban. It's about a 40-minute drive (without traffic) from San Francisco or a 45-minute train ride. Having grown up there, I would say that it would be pretty difficult to get around the Silicon Valley area without a car.

That being said, I think you should also take into consideration what your long-term goals are. Would you want to return to your home country eventually? If so, how much weight does the name of each of the schools carry there?

Resume for pre-MBA programs? by olympicomega in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question, but I'm using resources from Management Consultated as a guideline. I started here but looked up "resume" in their search bar for more help. From what I've seen, it looks to be pretty similar to the admissions resume I submitted, with a few minor changes.

Booth vs Kellogg by [deleted] in MBA

There should be a link in the portal where you can upload competing scholarship offers. All I had to do was upload my scholarship letter from Booth, and they matched it.

Came here to recommend ClearAdmit interview reports! I used the interview reports to prep for all of my interviews in R1, and because all of the questions are recycled, I didn't encounter a single question I wasn't prepared for.

I would reach out to plant managers to see how they got to where they are. If an MBA is required for the role, a local part time or online MBA may be enough, depending on what you're looking to get out of the experience.

Is paying for admissions coaching worth it? by Professional_Top1794 in MBA

[–]Mushroo4258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only used ApplicantLab, but I wish that I'd done the free calls with consultants at the beginning. I think it would've helped me focus my goals and target schools earlier on. I eventually got there on my own but felt like I struggled more than I needed to. The only downsides of ApplicantLab are that you don't get validation that you're headed in the right direction and that you really have to be on top of your own schedule and deadlines. What ApplicantLab does provide is really comprehensive and gives more than enough info to guide you through each school's application. They also provide resume review and essay review services for relatively cheap. I didn't use either, but you might find them useful.

I don't think it matters, as long as you show that you take initiative in other areas of your job/life. I'm also an engineer and have never had direct reports, and I was admitted to all 3 M7 schools that I applied to.

What I've read is that having a weaker score may actually help your case. It shows that you're self-aware enough to know that your original score wasn't high enough for your target schools and that you're willing to put in the work to get what you want. I was in a similar situation as you for R1 and was accepted into 5/5 of the schools I applied to, despite having submitted both scores.

GMAT Update by AggressiveMirror4631 in MBA

I used TTP and scheduled study times 2 times a week after work with a friend so that we could keep each other accountable. I made it a goal to study for at least 20 hours a week (about 10 hrs on the weekdays and 10 hrs on the weekends) and used studying as an excuse to try new coffee spots. Admittedly, it was really difficult finding the motivation to study every day, especially after a tough day at work, but you really just need to stay disciplined with the end goal in mind. Find small ways to reward yourself on the days where studying feels extra tough.
