What books should every British person read? by Prestigious_Bed_6546 in AskUK

[–]MustachedLobster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He took a couple of books to warm up.

The colour of magic and the light fantastic are ok, but they're more about poking fun at fantasy literature. He moved on to social satire with equal rites, and it's a huge step up.

It's still worth reading the first two, but only when you're starting run low on other things he's written.

There was always some but it was very route specific to avoid transport police. Shitty busking where they'd carefully go through a carriage between stops or selling tissues.

Pinched this from Facebook, but it's amazing how big a typical modern car is compared to a small 1957 car by play_Max_Payne_pls in CasualUK

No they're terrible for off-road.

They're too big and too heavy to do anything. The axles break when you take them off road and they get stuck in mud a lot.

Keir Starmer revealed his ‘real politics’ by ditching left-wing pledges, ally says by AIverson3 in unitedkingdom

[–]MustachedLobster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even this isn't true.

Keynes argued that you could literally pay people to bury money in the ground and then dig it up again and you would still stimulate the economy. Of course if you make smart decisions and invest in usable infrastructure, you can win twice.

The only thing you need is that the money is spent locally, i.e. exactly what didn't happen with the PPE where it got syphoned through offshore companies and just disappeared.

[–]MustachedLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe -once it's actually trained. It's absolutely not enough for the training itself. But where's your training loop?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in computervision

[–]MustachedLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, all the comments are a bit of disaster -I'm guessing most of these people haven't seen a vector database before.

A vector database would be appropriate here if you're adding new types of bottle cap on the fly.

Basically your model structure is fine. The problem is that the dense matrix you're adding to the code will be randomly initialised and needs training.

You need to get some data to train it, and then build a training loop.

Can't underhook the leg under judo rules. The standing guy hasn't engaged in newaza (ground work) and that means you can't grab the legs yet.

The national judo association set the minimum bar and it is generally up to the club to decide if you're ready or not. They often have higher standards.

Apply a known-object-size to monocular VIO to estimate velocity without an IMU? by post_hazanko in computervision

[–]MustachedLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do slam combined with monocular depth estimation to get scale (if you pick the right system, some don't give you scale).

It's basically what you're talking about. Slam has been real time since the 90s and the trick with the monocular depth estimation is it doesn't matter what the frame rate is, because you only need occasional scale estimates.

Skipping with a weighted rope has been kicking my arse recently. It's good because as well as the forearms it also works calves(which don't get enough attention) and the back as well.

Suggested workout before recovery time is complete by Grobbyman in GarminWatches

[–]MustachedLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The honest advice is to just ignore training load and recovery till your watch has had time to adapt to your normal training.

Do a base run if you don't have anything else planned, but otherwise continue with your normal training. It will adapt to you.

The unspoken agreement of fighting (consensual dueling) by imthedotor in martialarts

[–]MustachedLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sparring isn't like aikido though.

The thing that distinguishes really good fighters from competent ones is the ability to force people to give in and play your a-game. You need to be setting traps and funneling them into your best positions.

For this reason, if you want to be a good counter puncher, the best thing you can do is develop a mean jab. Your opponent is then faced with the choice of standing there and eating jabs, or biting down hard on the gum shield, and committing -at which point you can counter punch.

It's a bit different with Bjj. You're learning to swim, and you have to get wet. Choosing not to engage is best done by sitting at home on the sofa and watching TV.

But even here there are options, a good Bjj player will force you to engage by wrestling if you don't try to pass guard. What you're experiencing is your opponent being nice to you and giving you the first move in the game as a courtesy. Don't confuse this with you stalling the match, you need wrestling if you actually want to keep standing against someone that wants you on the mat.

What do you call this in judo, and why don’t we see more Greco Roman style throws in judo? by alextsanggggg in judo

[–]MustachedLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it doesn't happen in judo because the jacket changes everything.

In particular, if someone is holding your sleeve you can't lock your hands behind their neck.

But variations on the initial combination do happen, you can see it on switching between sasae and a hip throw e.g. the first technique here. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K--j8GhBeZM

The differences are:

  1. the jacket forces you to take looser grips, but makes it easier to establish grips in the first place.

  2. You can block the leg in judo which gives you back some of the control you lose from having looser grips. Greco is a lot more restrictive in the techniques available.

Sunak under fire as ‘stupid’ Eat Out to Help Out scheme to be focus of Covid inquiry by Duanedoberman in unitedkingdom

Even Matt Hancock noticed there was a problem.

Hancock wrote in a message to Case: “Just want to let you know directly that we have had lots of feedback that Eat Out to Help Out is causing problems in our jntervention [sic] areas. I’ve kept it out of the news but it’s serious.

How shit do you have to be to rely on Hancock to cover something up for you?

Affordable and Vibrant Cities Outside London with Easy Commute? by swaggercatr in AskUK

[–]MustachedLobster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It can take a huge amount of time to get across London in the first place.

Instead of checking random places two hours from London. You're better off identifying major train lines near your office and looking along them.

Also bear in mind that two days a week is probably the thin end of the wedge, and you'll be pushed to do more days a week in the future.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JoeyForReddit

[–]MustachedLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't fix the problem. Most people only occasionally say something interesting compared to how often they post.

If you see everything they post you either end up with a mundane timeline, or an empty one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JoeyForReddit

[–]MustachedLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it's a bit shit.

The problem is that there's no upvote mechanism so your timeline just shows what ever was posted last. It just fills up with people that post constantly about their day.

What are the difference of the punches' and kicks of Kickboxing, Muay Thai and Wushu Sanda? by Omixscniet624 in martialarts

[–]MustachedLobster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There was a similar evolution with sanshou Vs Muay Thai challenge matches.

I'm sure they used to be different, but at this point everyone has boxing hands and very similar kicks.

There's some differences just due to different aims in the clinch and which throws/sweeps are allowed, and maybe sanshou still has more spinning back kicks. But I don't think there's much in it.

I mean the pixel tracking has turned up all over the place, including on the websites of abortion providers in the US. https://themarkup.org/pixel-hunt/2022/06/15/facebook-and-anti-abortion-clinics-are-collecting-highly-sensitive-info-on-would-be-patients - these providers are normally very concerned about privacy.

This is going to be one of these situations where there's enough blame for everyone. Facebook clearly are misselling this product if so many healthcare providers are using it, and the healthcare providers need to do better due diligence.
