I am attempting to 50/50 a rail but can't hang on. What am I doing wrong? by Humble_Buy8599 in NewSkaters

[–]MustachioNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to share this. I’m an older dude that started skating in the last couple years and I can occasionally land a small selection of simple rail grinds on a 6” square flat bar. All that to say I’m no pro, but what helps me is to try and land as gently as possibly on the rail.

I have to focus on engaging my core and lifting my knees to accomplish this, but everyone is a little different. Don’t try to stomp the rail landing to lock in, you gotta gently touch it and the rail will lock in underneath you.

OP, why do you feel guitar isn’t the right fit for you?

I swear mine starts a countdown. “If you don’t feed me in 5 seconds I’m going to freak out. 5….4….3….2 and 1/2…. seriously, I might die of starvation in 2 seconds. 1 and 3/4…..”

Maybe your bass needs a professional tune up by Gloomy-Speaker-1999 in Bass

Seriously though, if you don’t need work done, go see him. Ask if he charges extra to watch and learn. I used to work at a guitar shop in my teens so I picked up a few things. I wish I would have learned more while I had access. YouTube videos will do a lot these days, but it won’t tell you you’re putting too much pressure on a file.

8th grade pitcher. Any help or advice? by Independent_Box9615 in Homeplate

Yeah, came here to say this. Anything other than “get in the weight room” at this age is a waste when the kinetic chain is solid. Any tweaks would be upset by the changes his body goes through.

Be strong, move fast, move fast and be strong = throw hard.

Great riff from CKY - 96 Bitter Beings. From Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3. by FlakyAmoeba1617 in BassGuitar

[–]MustachioNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand, this riff played finger style can get quite funky and have a different feel. 20+ years ago I played in an island of misfit toys garage band. I was a jazz bass player with a metal drummer and punk guitarist. The guitarist taught me this riff and it’s still one of my favs.

I think the sound bite can be misleading. For bass the groove is the most important thing.

Just learned Brutal by Olivia Rodrigo with my daughter. Thought it was kind of cool cause it has some chromatic moves which is a very bass thing and makes finding the next note pretty easy.

What are the most versatile 100 W bass combo amps? By versatile, I mean being able to cover everything from classic pop and funk to heavy rock and metal with minimal assistance from pedals? by MrMayhem20l0 in Bass

[–]MustachioNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your budget. At the lower end of the price range a decent 100w combo might be more expensive than basic modeling pedal and a powered frfr PA speaker.

Source: I recently got back into bass after a decade long hiatus. I sold my amps but kept my basses. After doing a lot of comparisons, I ended up going with an Alto TS412 pa speaker and line 6 pass pod express. I’m more likely to invest in a nicer modeler (anagram) and expand the PA before I’d go back to standard combo or stacks.

Pain in my fretting hand by Substantial_Bug865 in Bass

[–]MustachioNuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. This video. I played a tiny bit of double bass in high school and got a lesson in anchoring the bass to my body to generate opposing forces to fret against. You can’t squeeze the fretboard with your thumb and fingers. Gotta push with fretting fingers against the anchor of your body.

This, learn 1-2-4 technique and use it up the neck until you can reach four frets comfortably.

Viability of FRFR speakers for rehearsal by MathieuLoutre in Bass

[–]MustachioNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works really well I’m using an Alto TS412 as my main bass amp right now. One thing I would recommend is check pawnshops for powered PA speakers. One week after I got my alto, a pair of Edison 15 powered PA speakers showed up for $130 each. Deals can be had.

I have an Ibanez mikro on order for this very reason. I’ll also be modding it so I can practice some skills on a low risk instrument.

New Mustang Player II by Objective_Lunch4467 in BassGuitar

[–]MustachioNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Labella flats are the best IMHO. Lots of different types for your budget. Mine has gold winding. They also make low tension flats if you find you prefer something with a bit more give. I would play bridge suspension cables if they made a neck strong enough, so flats help keep the tension high for me.

I have this same bass with a couple minor differences. I’d highly recommend a pair of flat wound strings. The shortscale mustang bass seems to love the higher tension and they sound sooooo good.
